Two areas motivate Microsoft for blockchain technology

Microsoft is apparently putting together a project team to deal with blockchain technology and its possible use for the company. In February, the position "Director of Crypto Business Development" was already advertised, now they are looking for a "Web 3.0 and Blockchain Principal Product Manager". There is nothing to read about the filling of the February position on the web, but that does not necessarily mean that no one has been found. The newly advertised position from June even speaks more in favor of it. The team is growing, but they seem to be keeping a low profile.

If you follow the tech company from Redmond you will find two drivers that seem to be the reason for the blockchain interest:
The company's own Azure enterprise cloud and its gaming division. The former is one of the fastest-growing areas in recent years and very profitable, gaming in turn is supposed to be an even bigger focus of the company than before. By 2023, the planned acquisition of the game developer Activision Blizzard is to be completed, at around $70 billion the largest in the company's history.
For both gaming and cloud, blockchain appears to be an exciting technology. A more decentralized cloud with new additional features such as smart contracts, specific tokens, and in addition the whole PlayToEarn area open up a lot of space for innovative business ideas. Not to mention NFTs and their applications.
I think Microsoft has recognized this and is rightly working on adapting and developing these business areas. By the way, Microsoft is a real early adopter when it comes to crypto payments: as early as 2014, you could pay for games in the Store with Bitcoin.

Bill Gates, on the other hand, thinks nothing of cryptos

But what does Bill Gates have to say about it? The Microsoft founder keeps railing against cryptos or NFTs. It all works according to the "Greater Fools Theory", he himself is not invested, unlike quite a few other tech greats (e.g. Elon Musk-BTC/DogeCoin, Tim Cook-BTC).

How does this fit together?

Well this seems at first glance to be a real conflict of interest between founder Gates and Microsoft management. Gates' opposition is probably based in large part on his closeness to Warren Buffett. After all, the two are good friends and sometimes flip a few burgers together. (->Gates & Buffett at Dairy Queen)

Buffett is a self-confessed no-coiner who already called Bitcoin rat poison and recently reiterated he wouldn't want all Bitcoins even if they were offered to him for $25.

Personally, I think Gates is considered (and probably isn't) less competent in the crypto field than in the software or classic tech fields. So his statements always have media coverage but are probably dismissed by many as far as this area is concerned. So according to the motto: "Maybe he doesn't know any better". He also doesn't speak for Microsoft, because officially he hasn't had a position in the company for two years.

Conclusion

In the end, what Gates says is not as important as what Microsoft does. That, as described above, is actually quite a lot and I am confident that Microsoft can advance the adaptation of blockchain. The potentials are enormous and they certainly don't want to just leave that to the others.

In the end, it's not so much what Gates says that matters, but rather what Microsoft does.

How do you see the whole thing? Could Microsoft even play a role for Hive one day? After all, with Splinterlands we have one of the biggest blockchain games and one of the biggest gamer communities on the web3...

Aber was sagt Bill Gates dazu?

Fazit

Am Ende ist also nicht so entscheidend was Gates sagt sondern vielmehr was Microsoft macht.
