Bozzlife: We deserve better
You are probably going to start reading this post and wonder "how in the world is this a LEO post?". I promise, if you stick with me and read it through to the end, I will get you there. Have faith!
Over the past couple of months, my wife and I have been trying to keep a better eye on what we are eating. It is probably a futile effort around the holidays, but it is something we are trying to commit to.
We already eat pretty decent, but we wanted to just take that extra step to improve our health.
Anyway, this shift to eating a little better has led us to spend a lot of time online looking at recipes on many blog channels via my wife's Pintrest boards.
It never fails that we find a recipe that we want to use and then we struggle through countless frustrations trying to read the recipe via the original blog post.
In case you have never seen one, a typical recipe blog post is about five or six pages of text with the majority of the screen real estate being taken up by ads. There have been several occasions where we completely gave up because it was just impossible to get the recipe to load because of all the ads.
The Epiphany
The other day I actually started to take the time to think about these blog sites and I wondered to myself why they would choose to make things so horrible for their readers.
That is when I realized (I am not sure what took so long) that the ads are the way they get paid for their content. It immediately made me think of Hive and Leo and how clean the interfaces and blog posts can be while still rewarding the author.
I understand that the rewards are probably no where near what Steve or Susie homemaker pulls in with their ad laden blog post. But why should that be the case?
When did it become acceptable for an author to pull in more money by giving their customers a worse experience? If I were going into a brick and mortar store and my shopping experience were less than exceptional, I wouldn't go back. I would find a new store.
Why isn't that the case with recipe blogs? Remember, it is the majority of recipe sites that are like this. This horrible user interface has become the norm.
Wouldn't it be awesome if we could usher these people over to Hive? It would certainly be a boon to the people who visit the site. Unfortunately with current prices it probably wouldn't be a benefit to the publishers.
I don't have an answer, I don't have a fix, but these are some of the things that have been kicking around my head lately...
