I got home from school that Wednesday afternoon but met her absence. I was 6 years old at the time. I remember correctly. She was always either the first or second person I see when I get back from school. I went into her bedroom but she wasn't there. I searched every corner of the house but didn't find her. I called out but got no response. There was no one else at home to ask where she had gone. 'Maybe she went to get something' was what I thought. Towards evening, my dad got back and told me she had been admitted at the hospital. I was shocked. She had prepared me and dropped me off at school that morning. She never showed signs of weakness so what happened?

I pleaded with my dad to go back to the hospital with him that evening but he refused. She didn't come back home that day nor the next. By this time, I was already crying for my Mama. On the afternoon of Friday when I got back from school, my daddy took me to see her. I still remember what the outside of the hospital looked like even tho I don't remember it's name. When we walked in, we were greeted by nurses. The halls were painted in white and they were very neat. Until then, I don't think I've ever been to a hospital atleast none than I can remember. We walked into the ward she was in. You would have thought I would be delighted to see her but I wasn't. I was scared. All I saw were the many tubes stuck in her. I greeted the other patients, walked up to her and held her tightly making sure not to graze any of the wires. My mum is like the strongest person I know and seeing her look weak and worn out came as a bad shock.

Shortly after, a doctor came in with a pad and pen in hand and a stethoscope on his neck. He went round to all the patients asking questions, scribbling on his pad and dishing out instructions. I saw how eagerly everyone looked at him paying rapt attention to what he was saying. Confidently. I had always said I want to be a medical doctor, I like how smartly they dress, their poise, compusire, but, at that moment, I was sure I wanted to be there. I belonged there.

So, now you know. I want to be a Medical doctor. The role of doctors can never be overemphasized. Apart from medicine being a noble profession, I want to be able to help people. I may not be able to help everyone, but as many as I can make happy will bring me so much fulfillment.

Everyday, everywhere people fall ill, women get pregnant and go into labour, get distressed etc and health checks are required. Medicine has helped to cure, diagnose, prevent diseases.Take the outbreak of Covid-19 for instance; all health workers were deployed back to field. It was all medicine. They were needed not just to test and administer vaccines, but the stop the virus entirely. Without them, I wonder what would have been the case.

Seeing my mum lie in that hospital bed gave me even more reason to stand with this course. With the failing health sector in my homeland, I even more want to be part of these Life savers. I want to be able to provide them with immediate and quality medical care and attention firsthand.

Life is Ultimate and Medicine is here to make sure it is in check. Thanks for stopping by. Goodday!
