There is nothing like that new Insert product smell as the saying goes, there is an absolute satisfaction that comes with purchasing something new that tickles our brain in a way we can't describe. There was a time when consumers would stop, look, listen and think before deciding if they should part with their labour+time in the form of money in exchange for some shiny new trinket.

As companies got smarter and people got dumber, a magpie effect ensured, and the product doesn't matter as much as the feeling it brings you. Instead of purchasing something for the sake of its utility we now buy things for the way they look, the way they make us feel, the fact that its new, the brand name, the social status and the ability to flex your resources to those around you.

A society of spenders

IF that wasn't enough to cause a cycle of consumerism, we now have generations of consumers who advocate consuming as if they were a religion. Have you heard of iPhone our Lord and Saviour? Do you have time to listen to the right word that is Samsung? Consumers have become brand evangelists, and so many people don't even realise they are walking adverts.

Have you ever met someone who bought a new phone or car, it's all they can talk about, they need to sell you the idea of their purchase to validate why they purchased it, they can't only be happy with the purchase. However, they don't want you to make the same purchase but also feel pressured to make a similar purchase in a lower or same bracket from another brand. Because even though I love this product, I don't want you to use it because it speaks to my ability o spend and individuality.

These are probably some of the weirdest most nonsensical conversions you will ever have should you take the time to listen to the various contradictory statements from someone who paid for a product and then to be their unofficial spokesperson.

Pressure purchases

Now the average person who isn't clued up feels pressure to purchase because his car or phone is a few years old or models behind. Regardless of the fact that said purchase provides you with the utility you need at a diminishing cost to you as you extend the use of it you now feel irrationally competed to purchase something new that provides the same service but at a higher cost.

A consumer is a one-trick pony it only knows how to consume and if you take your advice from the average consumer what are they going to tell you? To consume!
