Deepfakes have to the potential to wreak havoc on society and we are not prepared. Considering the number of fanboys that hang on Elon Musk’s every word makes him a great target for deepfakes. Elon is known to spout nonsense and pump crypto projects so when a recent video showing Musk sharing crypto investment opportunities is not that out of the ordinary. The most concerning part of this new video is that it’s not even him — it’s a deepfake!

The video with deepfake Musk started popping up on YouTube and Twitter which introduces a scam cryptocurrency platform called BitVex. BitVex is an elaborate rouse that steals the crypto of those who deposit to their addresses. Scammers behind BitVex say the platform was started by Musk and developed “by the best mathematicians from Tesla,” according to a poorly made YouTube video on BitVex’s channel.

In the video, Fake Musk talks about how this BitVex project will provide individuals who deposit their cryptocurrency in the platform a 30% return on their investment every day within three months. Even that sounds too good for a Musk project so the warning bells should have been triggering this is a scam. For those in the space, you might have picked up that this video is made from a real interview the Elon gave to TED head Christ Anderson in April. However, this version you can see there is something off since their voices barely match their mouths.

Digging into BitVex a bit more you realize this is only one of the deepfake used by the scammers to try to lure victims. It seems the scammers stated this same scam in May deepfakes of high-profile people in crypto, tech, and investment, including Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, and Ethereum co-founder Charles Hoskinson. It seems that it has not been too successful, but it should be a warning for the community because if these scammers could make more convincing videos I know many would fall for their plot. Right now these types are scams are still pretty young as more new users get into the crypto space we will see them become victims.
