Half The Battle Won

Having someone open doors for you is actually more than half the battle and is more like 75% of the work already done. I am hoping for a very good month as just adding 2 or 3 companies to your client list can make up for lost time.

On Friday I had a quick phone call with my 'old' client making sure they have moved on and this was confirmed. I didn't want to crate waves if they were still my client as that is ethically wrong and not something I would ever dream of doing. I was hoping they had moved on as now more profitable business has opened up.

My contact who I bought on board last week has furnished me with a list of companies and his "friends" who are in charge. How it works is he gives them a call first giving them a heads up I will be calling and I take it from there. If there are more hurdles to jump through I can always bring him back into the negotiations, but that hasn't been the case up until now.

The hardest part is the contact and speaking to the correct person who makes the decisions. The CEO is a good start as everyone tends to listen and makes those favors a priority. I have had 3 from 3 so far with him in the past and only one of them was not worth our while. I know if I just phoned I would most likely be fobbed off but having someone revered by everyone in the industry on board they won't say no.

The interesting part about his list is that 2 of the companies we have never heard of before and a quick search on Google showed one as being rather large with 37 smaller subsidiaries under it's umbrella. That type of contact is like gold dust as we would never have found this on our own. I have tried in the past and it is like a maze to get anywhere consuming hours of time with no reward.

The one company I specially asked him to look into as my old client used to supply 1 depot turns out that they have 5 such depots dotted around the country so the account just got 5 x bigger. That is another of his mates and will be contacting him in the morning as Monday is never a good day along with Friday. Seems strange that you have to right off two days, but most work is done on Tuesday to Thursday and trying to talk to someone on any other day tends to be less successful. Problems are dealt with on Mondays and planning for the week ahead and Friday is just Friday with many only working a half day.

We have had supply issues to contend with as well now as the raw material supplier has given us enough for only two days manufacturing. This will be the same for everyone so even though we are open we will be shut down for the next week. My partner is making calls to his friends involved in the industry who0 may be closed anyway due to no business and will see if we can pick up their raw material. It pays to keep friends in the industry as you just never know who can help with what problems like material shortages.

There is a massive price increase at the end of this month and it is far too early for suppliers to be holding back so I believe it is a genuine shortage. As long as everyone is in the same position then it is something the industry can deal with and not a problem we can fix ourselves. We are all tied to one Government controlled chemical company as our supplier and hoping that changes over the coming years.
