These days how can you afford not to have Private Healthcare knowing how bad relying on the government healthcare really is? Surely this has to be part of your monthly budget even if you sacrifice something else.

Private health care is somehting I have always had since I was in my early twenties so a good 30 years and know no different. You don't plan to use the facilities, but they are there when required and you just never know what is around the corner. You only know how vital this is when you require the treatment and by then it is too late.

I was chatting with my mother this morning who lives in the UK and she shocked me as to how bad the NHS really is. My Aunt died a week or so ago and the communication was what was lacking. My Uncle had no communication for 11 days from the doctors until day 12 and then she died on day 13. He was told on day 12 that they expected her to live between 6-12 months due to a heart condition (Covid?) which was unexpected as she has always been healthy. This was the NHS and not private as you are just a number and obviously there is a lack of care.

My mother who is waiting on 6 weeks of treatment before going to her specialist has already been waiting 3 weeks. She phoned the doctors rooms and they had heard nothing so she phoned the hospital who then informed her they responded the same day 3 weeks ago. They resent the reply immediately at her request. Again this is the NHS and if you have a serious problem 3 weeks could be life changing.

I know many sign up for private health care to reduce the waiting times for operations as they are virtually instant. I remember going in to see my specialist for key hole surgery and this was at 10am and he offered me the operation for after lunch which I backed out of and agreed the next day instead. This is how things should be and have known no different.

Looking at the above table for the various prices spending £100 per month is not going to kill you yet not spending it might with the speed and non efficiency of how the NHS is working.

Another perfect example is a friend of mine had their gall bladder removed a month before I had my operation. This was late last year so this is also current and they were sent home for over 2 weeks whilst a bed could be found at the local hospital. I was admitted the same day and was already out and recovering in the time they had to wait just to be admitted.

This is a gall bladder, but what if it was more serious as this is your health we are talking about. How can anyone trust the system and take it seriously knowing there are some serious problems to contend with when you need it most.

I know when I eventually leave South Africa which is hopefully fairly soon I will have to budget in private health care as I am no gambler when it comes to my health. I just wish I could afford to pay my mothers private healthcare and possibly should have been doing this for her from years back already. I knew things had deteriorated quite considerably, but never knew it was quite this bad.
