There are three reasons that I can think of why someone would take an interest in cryptocurrency:

  • An interest in the technology
  • Anti-censorship/privacy uses
  • Investment opportunities

I introduced my girlfriend to cryptocurrency for the first time in November 2020, and despite her being a nerd like me, I used the latter reason to sell the idea.

We are both very open to each other about our finances and it has allowed us to talk casually about subjects that I know from experience can sometimes be "taboo".

It also means there's a high level of trust. Before the Bitcoin boom if someone had told you there was an investment opportunity that could give you 500% returns in a year (Ethereum) you would probably be more likely to give your bank details to a Nigerian Prince than to believe them.

Hello sir, there is a pigeon in your Ethereum wallet... Source because I doubt phone jacker ever made it out of the UK...

But when I told her there was a website that would give her ~$30 of various crypto just for watching a few minutes of videos and taking a quiz, she jumped at the chance.

Well that's how simple it was for me. Little did I know that coinbase has been increasingly difficult and unreliable recently. (An article I've been meaning to write). Remember how I said I introduced her to crypto in November? That's how long it took to verify her account. 3 months.

In the meanwhile I've been there to point out events like the BTC price explosion from institutional investments and the recent dip potentially caused by "some asshole on twitter". All billion dollar events that go totally unnoticed by most people.

So where do I go from here? Well I am 100% not going to suggest investing her own money. Price volatility can go both ways and I would feel extremely guilty if I suggested something and it tanked. Instead we're going to start off simple and safe. Noise.cash for low effort - low reward microblogging and if that goes well, Hive.

And eventually coinbase earn once she's at the front of the wait list. Which if the verification is anything to go by, will be around the same time as the heat death of the universe.
