I came across CZ's Principles while researching the recent FTX saga.

Turns out CZ has a document he shares with Binance employees to help them understand his leadership style. He has now made it public in response to a recent Reuter report.

There are some interesting things CZ shared about how he operates. People who are interested in personal effectiveness should have read to understand how the business leader of a global company manages things around them.

In his manual, he shares succinct points about the following:

  1. General Principles (such as fairness, relationships, and ethics)
  2. Understand the World
  3. Decision-Making Framework
  4. Team and Organization
  5. Hiring
  6. Leadership Style
  7. Targets, OKR/KPIs
  8. Business Deals
  9. Passive BD, Go for Low Hanging Fruits
  10. Work Style - Don’t Waste Time
  11. Communication
  12. Meetings
  13. Products & Delivery
  14. PR
  15. Rest, Stay Calm & Relax

Personally, I took note of his Decision-Making Framework, which I found useful to develop too.

Essentially he shared that he first goes back to first principles if the issue touches on core principles. If not, categorize the issue as Big vs Small, and Reversible vs Permanent, and work accordingly. Small issues, deal with them fast. The big issues, slowly with more thoughts. Decisions that are reversible and decisions that lead to permanent consequences are also dealt with differently. Lastly, he also touched on the importance of others' expertise and sufficient information when making decisions. These are certainly not new ideas, but nice to have it outlined to prevent blind spots when making decisions.

Interestingly, he also shared his hiring philosophy. It is pretty pragmatic and suits the modern world. One of which is: Don’t hire people who are worried about titles. It’s not a deal breaker, but definitely not a good sign.

His preferred writing style is to be succinct, and he demonstrates it in his writing.

Like most successful leaders, he does not like to waste time. He shared some of his thoughts on that. But what tickled me is that he thinks certain things are not needed at meetings, like reiterating the agenda, and to thank the attendees for attending. I guess if you work in Binance, you are expected to read the agenda before starting and you are paid to attend the meeting anyway!

I leave you to pick up your thing within CZ's Principles.

I think he should come blog on Hive!

Simply love his succinct writing style, which is a joy to read.

Perhaps we need more such succinct writers who can pack value well if Hive blogging is to scale.
