All that's really needed to get to that 10K mark is greater depth. If you go back a while on Asher's Hive Engagement League rankings, the key to large numbers wasn't so much that the top 10 were commenting fiends, but that it took 50, 70, even 100 comments to even make it into the top 100.

So I see one of the keys here being the "small fry" (like myself) upping their game from 5-10 comments a week to 50+ comments a week. The additional benefit of that is a more well-rounded user experience, with more voices being seen, rather than just the same voices talking more.
