The Hive blockchain went live on March 21, 2020. The majority of the community migrated to the new blockchain along with the majority of dApps.

How is the activity doing on the blockchains? Here we will be looking in the numbers and not just in terms of posting but other activities as well, like custom JSONs that are mainly driven by games.

Before we continue with the analysis just a note on the activities. Unlike the good old Bitcoin, that has only one operation (transfer coins), Hive has a lot of them.

Usually when talked about activity on these blockchains a lot of the users have in mind posting and commenting. Here we will be looking in the top 4 activity on the blockchains. They consist the majority of all activity:

  • Posts
  • Comments
  • Votes
  • Transfers
  • Custom JSON operations

The above consist the majority of all the activities on the blockchain. The claim rewards operation has also a high number of activity, but we will leave out that one.

Number of Posts and Comments

Here is the chart for the number of posts and comments on the Hive blockchain.

At first the number of posts and comments went up, especially during the price pump at the end of April 2020. Then a small drop and a period of steady numbers of posts and comments until the Hardfork in October. A small drop again in October and a semi stable numbers since then.

The overall number of posts and comments on a daily basis has been in the range of 10k to 15k per day.

Number of Votes

The chart for the votes looks like this.

Votes are one of the core operations on the Hive blockchain. That is how the rewards are distributed. The Proof Of Brain mechanism (PoB) ๐Ÿ˜Š.

The number of votes was started with around 150k per day, then reached 250k, followed by a small decrease after the last HF in October to around 220k to 230k votes per day.

Number of Transactions

The chart for the transactions looks like this.

The number of Hive transfers has grown steadily since the creation of the blockchain with the exception of the HF period. It started with around 5k per day and these days is around 15k daily Hive transfers. This means 15k times per day people are sending and receiving Hive. Gas free ๐Ÿ˜Š.

Number of Custom JSONs operations

The chart for custom JSONs operations.

This is an interesting chart ๐Ÿ˜Š. A big jump in the start of June. As mentioned, custom jsons are mostly used from the games on Hive.
Starting from June, Splinterlands migrated from Steem to Hive and increased the numbers of custom jsons operations by a lot. From around 25k per day to 600k per day.The nature of Splinterlands is like that. Its heavy on activity. The numbers have been steady in the last period in the 500k to 600k range.

Overall Activity on Hive

Well not quite overall but most of it ๐Ÿ˜Š. When we combine all the charts above, we get this.

As we can see the custom jsons operation are now dominating the Hive blockchain. In the last period more than 65% of all the operations on the Hive blockchain are custom jsosn.

Although we should mention that the โ€œweightโ€ of these operations is not the same, so its not totally comparable. Posts have the largest weight, as they require a lot of texts and effort.

Overall, the activity on the blockchain seems quite constant with a small drop. But when compared how much the price has went down the drop in activity is almost none excitant. It shows that the blockchain has a loyal user base that is resilient to the price action ๐Ÿ˜Š. Posts, votes and custom json operation all seems to have a stable number of operations in the last period, off course going up and down in some range. The numbers of transfers have been going up. Usually this is driven by the gambling apps where there is a lot for transfers.

All the best @dalz
