As the quote above indicates, census data alone does not give reasons. There's no proof people mostly left high tax states and mostly moved to low tax states because of the taxes. It COULD be a coincidence. But is that likely?

More than one business has left California explicitly stating that it was because of high taxes and the high regulatory cost of business. It should be no surprise that states that charge more to live there push people away. Government is terribly inefficient with money and higher taxes almost never results in better services, at least to the extent it justifies the higher cost of living.

With the Federal government now trying harder to collect taxes from crypto earning (based on every transaction no less), I wonder how states with income taxes (which is most of them) will be taxing crypto in the future? Those decisions alone may prompt some people to move.
