In many cases, what holds people back from getting the "big" things in life taken care of is the fact that the objective seems so huge and far away. I know this has certainly held true for me, from time to time.

You look at things like "Building an Investment Portfolio" or "Saving for Retirement" or "Buying and Renovating a House" or even "Writing a Novel" and they can feel so overwhelming that we tend to put them off because we just can't figure out where to begin... and the old truism "begin at the beginning" suddenly seems rather lame.

Keeping Things in Perspective

Rather than "Begin at the Beginning," I've found it helpful to keep in mind another old truism: "Even the longest journey begins with a SINGLE STEP."

You take a first step. And it doesn't have to be perfect. And — above all — it doesn't have to be a LARGE step!

In fact, most large goals we set for ourselves — like the few I listed above — are accomplished in a single fell swoop; they are accomplished by tying together 100's or 1,000s or even tens of thousands of tiny tasks.

Goals Within Goals Within Goals

For example, I had/have a goal of building a $100,000 (equivalent) cryptocurrency portfolio by my 65th birthday... which will be in August 2025. This was a goal I set back in 2015, even before these crypto blogging venues were a thing.

Now, I actually have had no money to invest with. So here's one for you: My very first crypto investment was funded by the jar of loose change I keep on my dresser. There was about $135 in there, give or take. Here's another one for you: that $135 remains the largest sum of fiat currency I have put into crypto at a single time!

Of course, since I got started, the Cryptosphere landscape has changed considerably, and there are so many more possibilities!

So now I have goals within goals within goals, all contributing to the greater goal. "Blogging on Hive" is a subgoal that has become part of the bigger goal. My rewards very slowly build in the form of HivePower... and "blogging every day" is a goal within a goal.

Meanwhile, the bigger goal is also being served by my occasionally still putting an occasional $50-$100 into cryptos, when I can afford it... which remains rarely. The bigger goal is also being served a small but growing investment "sub portfolio" in various Defi projects... each of which has their own "sub-goals."

I even have "sub-sub-goals" of building certain investment tokens on our own Hive-Engine DEX which — in turn — return tiny "drips" of an assortment of Hive-specific tokens. You might think that fractions of cents wouldn't be worth considering... but if you multiply them by dozens of different tokens across thousands of days, it's remarkable how much they can add up!

Patience, not Impetuousness!

One of the "disfavors" — at least in my opinion — our fast-paced modern society does us is imbue everything around us with a sense of urgency and impatience.

Taking the long approach can be a challenge in an environment that seems eternally fixated on "Wen Moon?" This can cause people to act impetuously, rather than patiently and methodically.

Interestingly enough, this post was actually prompted by my "taking stock" of the large closet in my home office, and realizing that I have enough inventory on hand for my "Old Postage Stamps for Collectors" business to create maybe 20,000-25,000 online listings, across a range of hobby sales sites I use.

Anyone who has tried selling on eBay, Etsy or anywhere like that knows that sales listings are a slow and sometimes tedious process. I ended up with so much inventory because I kept purchasing new "estate lots," and just skimming off the "high dollar" stuff for immediate sale and setting the remainder aside.

The "remainder" is all that perfectly marketable stuff that can be sold for between 50 cents to maybe $5-6 per item. It just has to be put "out there." Which is perfectly doable, if I stop thinking about "25,000 listings" and instead look at is as "20 listings a day for three years." Which happens to be just shy of 22,000 items!

Is it really worth it? Well, you tell me: 22,000 times an average price of $2.50 adds up to about $55,000...

Eventually, I'll be able to spend more time in the hammock!

Again, small goals within bigger goals within the overall goal!

It's just a matter of starting somewhere, and recognizing that this one blog post and the 20 stamp listings I will complete today IS both the small goal and the big goal.

I wish you much success with your goals, whatever they might be!

Thanks for reading, and have a great Friday!
