Nur wenige Banken sind dazu bereit, mit dem Krypto-Sektor Geschäfte zu machen. In den USA sind es vor allem Silvergate und Signature, die für einen Großteil der Fiat-Transaktionen und Einlagen im Web3 aufkommen. Eine von ihnen, Silvergate, gerät nun immer mehr in Schieflage. Die Bank hat es versäumt, ihren Jahresbericht pünktlich zu veröffentlichen, wie aus einem sogenannten 10K-Filing an die SEC hervorgeht. Das wirft Fragen bezüglich der finanziellen Gesundheit des Unternehmens auf.
Fragen, die die Investor:innen nun dazu bewegt haben, die Aktie der Bank abzuverkaufen. Zur Stunde ist der Silvergate-Kurs 31 Prozent im Minus.
"Diese zusätzlichen Verluste werden sich negativ auf die aufsichtsrechtlichen Kapitalquoten des Unternehmens … auswirken und könnten dazu führen, dass das Unternehmen und die Bank weniger als gut kapitalisiert sind”, erklärte Silvergate. Weiter heißt es: “Darüber hinaus prüft das Unternehmen die Auswirkungen dieser Ereignisse auf seine Fähigkeit zur Fortführung des Unternehmens in den zwölf Monaten nach Veröffentlichung des Jahresabschlusses”, so die Krypto-freundliche Bank.
Im Zuge des Krypto-Winters und des FTX-Skandals kam es zu einem Bank Run bei der Silvergate Bank. Im vierten Quartal zogen Kunden rund 8,1 Milliarden US-Dollar von den ehemals 14,3 Milliarden US-Dollar an Kundengeldern ab.
Die Krypto-Derviate-Plattform Ledger X und die Handelsplattform Coinbase haben den Zahlungsverkehr mit dem Unternehmen eingestellt.
Die Kryptobörse Crypto.com setzte kurzerhand US-Dollar-Überweisungen über Silvergate aus. Eine Reihe weiterer großer Player folgten. Auch Circle, Paxos, Galaxy, Gemini, Bitstamp und CBOE haben ihre Geschäfte mit der Bank eingestellt. Silvergate ist einer der wichtigsten Bankenpartner für den Kryptosektor.
Die Bank meldete außerdem einen Nettoverlust von 1 Mrd. USD im vierten Quartal 2022.
Nach Angaben von Bloomberg steht Silvergate kurz vor einer Klage durch die US-Justiz. Grund sei die Verstrickung in die Betrugsfälle um FTX und Alameda Research.

Mein persönliches Fazit:
Für mich ist das nur eine Verunsicherung der Trader. Der tatsächliche Wert der Kryptowährungen ändert sich durch die mögliche Pleite von Silvergate nicht. Mit etwas Glück könnte dies die letzte Unsicherheit sein, die der Markt aussortiert.
Das Geschäft der Silvergate Bank wird wahrscheinlich von anderen Banken gewinnbringend übernommen.

Only a few banks are willing to do business with the crypto sector. In the wake of the crypto winter and the FTX scandal, Silvergate Bank experienced a bank run. In the fourth quarter, customers withdrew about US$8.1 billion of what had been US$14.3 billion in customer funds.
The crypto serviate platform Ledger X and the trading platform Coinbase have stopped payment transactions with the company.
The crypto exchange Crypto.com unceremoniously suspended US dollar transfers via Silvergate. A number of other major players followed suit. Circle, Paxos, Galaxy, Gemini, Bitstamp and CBOE also stopped doing business with the bank. Silvergate is one of the most important banking partners for the crypto sector.
The bank also reported a net loss of $1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2022.
According to Bloomberg, Silvergate is about to be sued by the US judiciary. The reason, it said, was its involvement in the FTX and Alameda Research fraud cases.

My personal conclusion:
For me, this is just uncertainty for traders. The actual value of cryptocurrencies does not change with the possible bankruptcy of Silvergate. With any luck, this could be the last uncertainty the market sorts out.
Silvergate Bank's business will probably be taken over profitably by other banks.
