In 2019 the overall sales for organic food managed to surpass $50 billion in the United States and this was considered to be about a 5 percent increase from the year before.

In 2020 things were expected to go even better.

Organic food sales for 2020 increased 4.6 percent from the previous year.

They keep growing. And this is one market that is expected to reach almost $300 billion worldwide by 2027. More people are opting for organic when it comes to everything from butter and cereal to jam, cookies, and chips. Along with everything in-between.

Some of the top selling organic food items include bananas, kale, romaine, and tomatoes.

Before COVID-19 happened, and people started caring more about their health and eating right, there was already a growing number of individuals who had been looking for more organic options for their families.

Now, that desire to eat clean has only intensified with more people wanting organic over non-organic food items. Whether or not they are healthier is one thing, but the truth is that millions believe they are and they are ready to pay that premium for these products.

“Shoppers consistently relate that they choose organic because they believe the product to be ‘better for me and my family,’” - A. Jagiello, director of education and insights at the Organic Trade Association, Washington. “In 2019,

Surveys have shown that post COVID-19 that shoppers want organic items more than ever now and this is helping local organic farmers and farmers markets around the U.S. that have seen a boost in business this past year.

When people couldn't get what they needed at the grocery stores then they started turning to local farmers and farmers markets, and that didn't take long to put enough pressure to sell out those supplies as well.

For the farmers working in this market, they say that the organic practice leads to better quality food items, and their customers would most often agree which is why they're paying that premium for the items.

There will be more demand for organic farmers in the future as more people continue to opt for choosing one organic food item or product over the other. The demand for organic is already growing to extend to new categories, it now reaches into more than produce, including other food items, clothing, bedding, alcohol, and other beverages. Produce is the top organic category in terms of sales, followed by dairy and eggs. Overall, this market has grown to represent more than 5 percent of total US food sales and is still growing today.
