As cannabis has continued to become legalized in various places, the problem with packaging for this industry has become a growing issue.

Because of the strict rules regarding cannabis products, there is a great deal of waste that originally had been incorporated into many cannabis product packaging designs. For one joint alone, or a few grams of flower etc, you would be surprised at the level of garbage that would come with it.

A great deal of waste was being generated and it's quite the different experience for those who are familiar with traditional growers and buyers. They might have used a simple plastic bag rather than a 3-4 layers of plastic and paper packaging etc. So as the criticism for the garbage grew, so too did the need for a solution to this.

Already, you can see that adjustments have been made in some cases and they are trying to do better, but there is still a great deal of waste.

Now, some are going with compostable packaging solutions.

Compostable packaging for cannabis products (seen in the image above) has been introduced in places like Hawaii, where a dispensary in Maui is working with this current product.

The dispensary, known as Maui Grown Therapies, has come up with their own compostable solution for packaging their dispensary items. Their packaging is free of phthalates, BPA, and is made of bio-based materials.

The new cannabis packaging has been designed to break down within a matter of months, about 90 days.

This is a great solution to a big problem that needs to be solved within the market.

Also, if it weren't for so many unnecessary government restrictions on cannabis products as well, and general cannabis exchanges, then we likely wouldn't have as much garbage as we are seeing when these products are sold and used.

We can expect to see more cannabis companies and dispensaries move in this direction, looking for more environmentally responsible packaging ideas and solutions. Unfortunately though, they will be heavily restricted in how creative they can be with that packaging.
