Historically speaking, Hollywood's answer to challenges made by new technology was to go bigger. When television appeared in 1950s, the big studios began to make enormously expensive films made in colour, 2.35:1 picture format and other stuff you couldn't experience at home with tiny black and white set. Big disaster epics in 1970s were answer to challenge made by foreign and independent film in grindhouse and drive-in theatres. Same was true for 1980s sci-fi and other blockbusters competing with emerging home video market.

However, "going bigger" in present circumstances, when audience has unimaginably huge choice of alternatives, might not work as it did in past decades.
