Another December is near and this always comes with the mindset of celebration and spending. I grow up in a house where by this time we are already Preparing for December. My mum would have been stocking the house with food and buying our Christmas cloth because she believed during the festive period everything would have doubled in price.

Christmas always comes with pressure on Nigeria parents because all they want during this time is to make their families happy by buying new clothes for the young ones, cooking, and going to different places during this time and even though it is beyond their means they feel is it a must and some spend most of their saving of that year during the festive period.

Festive fever

Many people grow up with the same mentality, during this period everybody looks rich, and even those that are struggling badly still go the extra mile to feel among. Some people do all sorts of crazy things just to avoid what people will say if they don’t do it. This act leaves many exhausted financially after the festive period.

Some people use this period to prove that they are financially stable, spending more than they did in the previous months before festive period. There’s nothing bad in celebrating with our families or trying to make them happy but immediately we let this period get into our heads and spend beyond what we should, forgetting we have a whole year ahead of us, we are already in a bad place.

Breakout.

What I realized is during this time we let our emotions control us, we tend to use our hearts more instead of our heads. Most people have a December budget but the problem is that they don't stick to their budget plan, most people normally spend during this time because we believe it is once a year.

I don't see anything bad in making ourselves happy during this period but putting pressure on ourselves or borrowing money just to feel among others and spending beyond our means is what we should avoid. It is easier said than done but disciplining ourselves comes with determination and it is a craziness we must stop.

Thanks for your time.
