"Mac" is short for Macintosh, which is a computer that is an alternative to a PC. This is from Apple, the company that brought you the iPod, iPhone and the iPad, started by Steve Jobs and Steve "Woz" Wozniak. It runs an operating system Mac OS X which is based on Unix, as an alternative to Windows by Microsoft.
Since it doesn't have the same marketshare as Windows and a different pedigree, it is much more secure than Windows and less prone to the over 60,000 Windows Viruses and malware. Many Mac owners don't even need to install anti-virus software. Apple is also the Reaserch innovator for the entire smartphone industry, with companies running Android like Samsung and others copying everything Apple does when they release a new iPhone.
Apple leads, they follow.
