In most companies, every employee has to undergo an evaluation process. The process is different from company to company, for example, someone can receive an email with his rating and evaluation or visit an internal online site dedicated to this. Sometimes there will be a call or a face-to-face meeting for 30 minutes to an hour between the employee and his Manager in order to receive his evaluation and talk about the good and bad as well as how his performance will get better if needed.

in some rare cases, any employee can evaluate the other members of their team as well as the Manager which is quite good if there is objectivity around it and sincere talks. Sadly, though the evaluation process is something very stressful for everyone and most of the time things end up badly.

The main issue or issue lies in each individual and the keyword is objectivity. Sometimes the Managers aren't objective at all and other times the employee can't take any criticism even if that criticism has a basis. Heck, sometimes even the whole process and expectations from the employees are unclear.

These past few months i have listened to a lot of different opinions on the evaluation and how it's conducted and honestly, not a single one was positive. For example, a friend of mine was frustrated today because of his evaluation form as he received a B. The ratings are C,B,A,A+,A++,A+++. If you have A and above you get a nice bonus. If you have a B you get nothing and if you have a C you need to step up your game.

The funny and interesting thing is that not only has he never heard of anything bad but he always listens to good things from his Manager. So after his evaluation, they had a call as to why he received a B. The Manager told him that for different tasks and stuff, he receives points and that he had 11/12 points, so for 1 point he lost the A and the bonus. That shows me either that the Manager is an asshole or that something lies behind and the company doesn't want to give bonuses.

So after the talk he had 2 things that got him angry. the first was that there was not any indication of how many points he receives from the tasks he does. Also, he was the only guy who brought over a referral to the company and he was responsible for his training as well. Especially in the IT market that is hard to find good employees without an over the top salary, bringing an employee over is not something that should not be taken into account. His Manager replied with a "You don't get any points from that it is expected from everyone to bring people over".No, it's not expected, it's not their job to do that and you can't devalue it that much. Maybe that Manager is an asshole after all.

Another related story that i recently heard, is that the Team Leader, has badmouthing other members of the team to the Manager with zero substance or by not telling the whole story leading ofc to a not-so-good evaluation from the Manager. On the other side there is an IT Manager in the company that i worked for that told us that he is evaluating everyone with an A, except if someone is really bad because he wants to avoid more stress.

Ahh and something funny that i heard and have heard sometimes is the evaluation of the Manager by the employees. I highly doubt that the employees will right what they feel or anything bad whatsoever as they will fear that somehow the Manager will get to know who was it. Also another funny thing is that the Manager actually reads those evaluations of himself which means that only a person that can take criticism well can actually get better and ofc even if the evaluations are bad nobody else from the higher-ups will ever know.

All in all the evaluation in companies is very tricky and that lies in us. Not many people are up from criticism and at the same time not many people are evaluating objectively. Thus, most of the time nobody is happy and that leads to more people searching for new jobs.
