Yesterday was Friday, but apparently, it wasn't any other Friday. Instead of the happiness of the weekend that was about to come, yesterday was the last Friday of November and that means it's Black Friday!

Black Friday, along with any other crazy thing, came from America and spread throughout the world. Basically, during that day a lot of companies sell their stock stuff very cheap to the point of 50%-80% off. Because of that with a simple youtube click, you can literally see videos of people fighting for TV.

Also, during that day some of these stores are crowded with people who wait outside for hours before the shops open in order to be the first to get some of those sweet deals. Now apparently instead of this thing to simply end, it spread throughout the world.

Greece is top in taking every crazy thing America does so ofc Black Friday should happen here as well. The first year of Black Friday in Greece was skeptical as not many brands took part in it but those that took made quite the money. That brings to now and i don't know how many years have been but literally, every brand is taking part in Black Friday including some Supermarkets as well.

Now because we are Greeks and we don't simply take something and let it roll as it is, we boost it and try to reach its limit. Black Friday in Greece is more like a Black week as it starts with most shops having some sales and discounts from Monday, with Friday, Saturday and Sunday being the days with the most discounts and offers.

There is of course a huge promotion happening on TV, Radio, and the Internet. Now that we established what a Black Friday is in Greece we need to see whether or not that particular event is worth and whether the average joe can find a good discount.

The sad truth that is the case in every single Black Friday here in Greece is that most of these big-time sales and discounts are actually fake ones. By fake i don't mean that there are no products or something, i mean that most of the brands are using tricks to lead people to buy the stuff at high prices.

First of all, everything that i will mention from now on is a fact and the reason is that i have close friends who either work or have worked for the biggest brands in Greece/World that take part in Black Friday. One of these tricks is to simply raise the price of a product 1-2 months before a big sale like Black Friday and then drop the price.

For example, you have a product selling for 20$, then you increase the price to 40$ and during Black Friday, you say something like 50%-60% off and you sell it again for 15$-20$, thus profits! Most of the consumers won't even realize it except if they monitor the price of a certain product they want to buy for months.

Another simple trick is to sell relevant products with huge discounts that most people won't bother to look at in detail. For example, you have 2 similar-looking gaming chairs. You give a 10%-20% discount at the first one and a 40% discount at the second one. They look identical with minor optical changes but the first one is actually metallic and the second one is plastic. On Black Friday with all the craze going around the consumer most likely won't check in detail the materials.

In conclusion, as you can see Black Friday turned out to be a battle of tricks that will make the consumer buy stuff that they don't actually need for the same prices that would buy the same stuff any day. There are some cases of actual discounts and offers but most of them are discounts of 10%-20% percent or some limited stock products that will take you time to discover. I don't think Black Friday is worth it nowadays and especially in these troubled times, we all need to spend our money on stuff we actually need.

What's your opinion on Black Friday?
