While reading the manual I saw it is approved as a legal tenderr in Australia.

Does that mean it can be used to pay for items.

Yep, it's technically just like any other $1 coin that can be used at the shops.

However, this one is made of silver and the metal value alone is obviously worth more than the IOU to the government for $1 so you really don't want to spend it.

But you can!

I've got these sorts of coins in my change before where little Johnny has obviously raided Dad's coin collection for change before spending it on lollies.

Can you just picture the look on the guy's face when he realises it got spent haha.
