🛑 Infura and the risks of centralization

Infura is the company responsible for developing the necessary tools for any developer to create their applications on Ethereum without having to worry about paying for and structuring high-cost infrastructures. The main factors for Infura to be used are:

  • Storage cost on Ethereum is extremely high and requires a lot of space;
  • It is complex to connect to the Ethereum chain;
  • Synchronization with the blockchain is time consuming;

Solving common industry problems, Infura has been widely adopted by leading applications in the crypto world. Metamask, Portis, uPort and so many other apps used it to create their wallets for users, enabling interaction with DeFi protocols, NFTs and DAOs on Ethereum and its scalability solutions - such as Polygon, Optimism and Arbitrum -.

Infura is the so-called RPC - remote procedure call -, standardized in many of the applications currently used in DeFi, including Metamask.

Despite demonstrating the efficiency and success of the company responsible for providing the tools, it began to depend on Infura's infrastructure. When everyone uses the same solution, its holder becomes responsible for the maintenance and functioning of the market. And we know the risks of centralization.

Last week, Infura experienced an instability in its infrastructure, taking offline all those who use it to provide its services. With ~30 million users on Metamask alone, users found themselves unable to interact with dapps. NFT collection releases were delayed, DEX transaction volume decreased, and community panic ensued.

However, this was not a one-off incident. In 2022, there were other problems at Infura that led to the inaccessibility of applications on Ethereum and its Layer 2. As a result, the market began to worry about centralizing Infura's infrastructure, seeking alternatives to the tools provided by the company.

Alchemy is one of them. Used by companies like Opensea, 0x, Augur and Maker DAO, it can be implemented by protocols in your dapps and used by you in your Metamask!

But how do you manage to exchange Infura for Alchemy in your wallet?

We'll show you step by step how simple it is to decentralize your Metamask 😉

💡 How to use Alchemy as RPC in Metamask

  • You will need to create an Alchemy account. To preserve your privacy, you can create an email address on Protonmail for this purpose only, or use your Google email.

  • Choose which chain you will use. To change the RPC of Ethereum and its Layers 2, select the first option.

  • You will need to name the application you want to use. We'll set it to Metamask Alchemy.

  • Choose the free plan, which will allow you to generate the link to exchange RPC.

  • Click on Skip for now to continue.

  • Keep the Capped Capacity option selected and click Continue.

  • The Alchemy desktop will be opened for you.

  • When you open it, you will see Alchemy allows users not only to use their RPC, but to monitor in real time the interactions carried out with their wallet. To access the Alchemy RPC link, go to View Key.

  • Copy the link in the HTTP. field

  • Access your Metamask settings.

  • Go to the Networks tab and click on Add a network.

  • You will paste the copied link in Alchemy in the “New RPC URL” field. The other parameters will be kept:
    • Network Name: Mainnet Ethereum - Alchemy
    • String ID: 1
    • Currency Symbol: ETH
    • Explorer Block URL: https://etherscan.io/
  • After entering the necessary data, Save the settings

  • At the end of the procedure, the display of your new Ethereum Mainnet using Alchemy's RPC should be the same as shown in the image above.

When using it, remember: with this RPC, your Metamask will not be using Infura's infrastructure. If you want to keep the default configuration of your wallet, you can leave it on stand-by and,* when there is an instability in Infura's RPC, you migrate the network “Mainnet Ethereum - Alchemy”.

This RPC can be used in other applications that use Infura as a remote procedure call. Wallets, gadgets, games or even a dapp you want to develop can use RPC from Alchemy - or from other companies.

🛑 Infura y los riesgos de la centralización

Infura es la empresa encargada de desarrollar las herramientas necesarias para que cualquier desarrollador pueda crear sus aplicaciones en Ethereum sin tener que preocuparse por pagar y estructurar infraestructuras de alto costo. Los principales factores para utilizar Infura son:

  • El costo de almacenamiento en Ethereum es extremadamente alto y requiere mucho espacio;
  • Es complejo conectarse a la cadena Ethereum;
  • La sincronización con la cadena de bloques lleva mucho tiempo;

💡 Cómo usar Alchemy como RPC en Metamask

  • Necesitarás crear una cuenta de Alchemy. Para preservar su privacidad, puede crear una dirección de correo electrónico en Protonmail solo para este propósito, o usar su correo electrónico de Google.

  • Elige qué cadena usarás. Para cambiar el RPC de Ethereum y sus Capas 2, selecciona la primera opción.

  • Deberá nombrar la aplicación que desea utilizar. Lo configuraremos en Metamask Alchemy.

  • Elige el plan gratuito, que te permitirá generar el enlace para intercambiar RPC.

  • Haz clic en Omitir por ahora para continuar.

  • Mantenga seleccionada la opción Capacidad limitada y haga clic en Continuar.

  • El escritorio de Alchemy se abrirá para ti.

  • Al abrirlo, verás que Alchemy permite a los usuarios no solo usar su RPC, sino monitorear en tiempo real las interacciones que se realizan con su wallet. Para acceder al enlace de Alchemy RPC, vaya a Ver clave.

  • Copie el enlace en el campo HTTP.

  • Accede a la configuración de Metamask.

  • Vaya a la pestaña Redes y haga clic en Agregar una red.

  • Pegarás el enlace copiado en Alchemy en el campo "Nueva URL de RPC". Los demás parámetros se mantendrán:
    • Nombre de la red: Mainnet Ethereum - Alchemy
    • ID de cadena: 1
    • Símbolo de moneda: ETH
    • URL del bloque del explorador: https://etherscan.io/
  • Después de ingresar los datos necesarios, Guardar la configuración

  • Al final del procedimiento, la visualización de su nueva Ethereum Mainnet usando el RPC de Alchemy debería ser la misma que se muestra en la imagen de arriba.

Cuando lo uses, recuerda: con este RPC, tu Metamask no estará usando la infraestructura de Infura. Si quieres mantener la configuración por defecto de tu wallet, puedes dejarlo en stand-by y, cuando haya inestabilidad en el RPC de Infura, migras la red “Mainnet Ethereum - Alchemy”.

Este RPC se puede usar en otras aplicaciones que usan Infura como una llamada de procedimiento remoto. Las billeteras, gadgets, juegos o incluso una dapp que desee desarrollar pueden usar RPC de Alchemy, o de otras compañías.
