Reflecting on the last year as a DAO

A year ago, ShapeShift announced that it would be the first company to fully decentralize the entire corporate structure while also issuing the largest Airdrop in history to help power our new DAO. ShapeShift promised to begin opening up all of its code in the coming months. At the time, much of the road to decentralization was in progress but still theoretical. Checking how the DAO is doing a year later, we can see that there has been an incredible amount of progress on this front. The community has become self-structured and more productive than we saw in previous forms of ShapeShift.

Some of the highlights include:

*Our Discord, at the end of 2021, had about 5,900 members. Today, there are over 9,700 contributing members with more joining every week.

In our announcement, we said that we would decentralize completely over time, as fast as we could. We have made significant milestones towards that goal:

  • ShapeShift released its new version: app.shapeshift.com in early 2022, a completely open source product created by the DAO.

  • ShapeShift DAO Treasury uses the Zodiac Reality module to allow SnapShot proposals to trigger transactions without any centralized intervention.

  • Our workflows use Colony for quoting and payment, and any reputable contributor can make a motion to make a payment from within a workflow.

  • Our core product, the ShapeShift platform, is hosted on IPFS.

  • The ShapeShift DAO exists completely independently. More than half of the new contributions come from contributors who were not associated with ShapeShift's previous centralized form, and the structure of the DAO will continue to evolve over time.

  • FOXChain is one of the important next steps for decentralized node infrastructure and is being developed by DAO members.

Much has been accomplished in such a short time on the road to full decentralization of ShapeShift DAO. In fact, I would state that ShapeShift DAO is already one of the most decentralized organizations in the entire crypto world: the power is in the hands of the community and token holders in making governance decisions, and anyone can join at any time. time to get involved and have your voice heard on the DAO Discord or Forum. It has been inspiring to see the community form and take on the ShapeShift DAO mission, each in their own way.

One of the amazing things to observe is how quickly the DAO has evolved as an organization. In traditional centralized organizations, especially when they grow to significant size, bureaucratic inertia develops, challenging organizational evolution. This is why change tends to be slow and laborious in most traditional organizations; on the contrary, ShapeShift DAO has transformed organically and rapidly over the course of a single year. This includes experiments on how work gets done, whether it's through the core workflows that the DAO funds, bounties of various kinds, and all sorts of community contributions across the board. The evolution of the DAO also includes innovating new products and services, such as FOXy and FOXChain, as well as assigning leadership (and subsequent changes to that leadership) in DAO workflows as needed. The debate about what the purpose and goals of the DAO should be is constantly evolving with the community and as market opportunities change.

ShapeShift as an organization has always changed shape, and the birth of DAO has further accelerated that evolutionary process. As in many crypto organizations and companies in the larger macroeconomy, the market downturn has forced a series of difficult conversations at the DAO. While this has been difficult and the reality that the DAO needs to extend its track and be more frugal during a bear market has set a more difficult tone, it has been inspiring to see so many devoted members of the DAO step up to have these conversations. each other for the long term of what is being built.

One of my biggest concerns when the DAO was released was that the human tendency to Consensus among contributors would be too great a force to allow difficult conversations and decisions at the DAO level when necessary (such as when a bear market sets in). While there was some of this initially when the markets were still in a better place, the reality of the bear market has seen a number of leaders step up within the community to push tough issues that are necessary for the survival of the organization through of difficulties. slim. Ultimately, I have seen much more ownership within the DAO model among its contributors than I have seen with employees in any of the traditional organizations I have been a part of.

DAOs can be a bit more complicated than other types of organizations due to their public and transparent nature, but I also believe that they are ultimately more productive for the community. There is no single executive team or authority to which the DAO can hand over this responsibility; instead, it is up to the members of the DAO to resolve these issues head-on, and I am confident that the DAO will only grow stronger in the tough times we are seeing in the market today. Many projects have failed to break out of previous crypto bear markets, but ShapeShift always has, and I hope ShapeShift DAO is no different in that regard as it is now more resilient than ever.

Ultimately, I couldn't be more proud of how far ShapeShift DAO has come in just one year. It is perfect? Of course not. There's a lot of clutter and stuff that gets sorted out as we go along. That comes with the territory of building something new enough on the frontier. However, the amount that has been produced, the community that has been formed, the evolution of the organization itself has far exceeded what I expected to be possible in a year. While the bear market may be here with us for a while, I look forward to the bright future that ShapeShift DAO and other decentralized projects are forging. DAOs are likely to look dramatically different in the years to come as they continue to rapidly evolve, but that's a good thing and gives me confidence that they're here to stay.
