Well I never thought that it would be so hard to a make a job related decision. Let me take you back a few weeks. A few weeks ago, I decided to explore the market and maybe leave my current employer. There were several reasons for that:

  • The extra tasks I do have to do outside my 40 hours work for the client do feel like a burden in stead of opportunities;
  • I do have a not so okay relationship with my direct manager;
  • Due to tax regulations I am forced to work from the office while my complete team is working from home, this is outside the influence of my employer.

So I did open my linkedin profile for work, updated my resume and so on. Maybe it is just time to move on after 23 years.

The week before my holiday I had some discussions with another potential employer. While in the first case I didn't want to work for a consultancy firm again, their offer is fair. Maybe even a little better than my current work package. But the salary isn't one of the reason I am thinking about switching jobs.

So yesterday I did receive their first offer. So it was time to get into action and be transparent towards my current employer. So I did inform my manager and it did hit him as a lightning on a cold winter but sunny day. I was very honest and open to him. While he did go into defense mode, he was more or less thankful that I did inform the company before a point was reached where the decision was made. So, 2 hours later I did get a call from his manager. Trying to investigate what the company can do to make me happy again and keep me on board. He did want to have a fair chance before I would sign at another company. While I don't think that this is possible I did grant him this. The company has been good for me, so I should give them a fair chance. So probably we will see what is possible tomorrow. He even did ask me if it would help if the Vice President would give me a call, but I did turn this down. No idea what a VP could say to have an impact on my potential decision, like written above it is not money related. If this would have been the case, things maybe were possible.

So, now I am in the process to create some lists for myself. Pro and cons for the current employer, why do I want to leave and so on. The a more or less same list from the new position. I was pretty sure during my holiday that it was time to move on. But still it is a hard nut to crack after working 23 years for the company. For sure because besides leaving the company it would mean that for the first time in my live I would work my home country.

To be honest I did expect that when the offer from the potential new employer was good enough, it would be a no-brainer, just like when it would have been the case when their offer would be below par. Don't know what is holding me back, is it my loyalty, it is some kind of fear for the unknown? I really don't have an idea.

Will be continued! Peter
