The end of a war does not come with weapons, bombs or missiles. Wars only end when the parties involved understand each other not as enemies, but as human beings.

A detour down the wrong street, a stone embedded in the windshield, detonations ... a lot of fire. Mona Juul decides to get out of the car while the bullets continue to break the air. She stops, amazed at what is in front of her eyes. Two silhouettes are face to face, one carries a rifle, the other just a stone; they are just children, innocent in a conflict they are forced to enter. Her eyes do not want to attack the other, only to apologize, forget for a moment that they are enemies in a war without mercy. The one in military dress lowers his rifle and the other, covered under damaged rags, hides the stone from him. There, amid so much death, they are willing to spare their lives. But something they miscalculated, because the battle is not only of two, but of many. Someone else did fire his rifle, and the stone fell to the ground… away from the lifeless body that he had no intention of attacking.

Ever since I can remember I have always heard about the conflict between Israel and Palestine. He did not understand the cause of so many lawsuits, massacres and bombings. When I saw the Oslo trailer circulating on HBO I knew immediately that I should see this story, because the movie gave references that would surely help me understand some things about this war. But I did not exactly meet that, what I saw was further. It is a feature film about two nations that never agree, but still do what is necessary to consolidate an agreement that can put an end to a totally bloody war scene. The weak gap between the borders may be enough for two cultures to destroy each other, more than that, it is intolerance that ends up winning the match.

Peace becomes difficult when war is fought by interests, territories and beliefs, because in those areas everyone wants to be right. In this context, the film is a smaller battle, no longer for a city or a strip, but for the difficult task of reaching an agreement between two sides that are not willing to give up their demands. The hands that wield weapons hardly see the true consequences of the bullets, but those who live it closely, as spectators of helpless feelings, testify that in war only the innocent pay with blood.

This film produced by Steven Spielberg tells the hidden story behind the negotiations between Palestine and Israel in 1993 in Oslo, the capital of Norway. The mediators behind the peace are Mona Juul and her husband Terje Rod-Larse, who have moved chips and established contacts to bring two enemies to the death at a table. In the midst of the escalation of the conflict, these two spouses will seek a clandestine channel of communication between both sides at the expense of a world that has decided to wash its hands. Directed by "Bartlett Sher" and with a script by "J. T. Rogers ”this feature film explores the complex work behind a negotiation that can end with a historical harmony between two peoples, or fail as it has failed so many times.

Communication and coexistence

Comunicación y convivencia

Oslo is a film that, in addition to revealing an attempt to negotiate between two nations, also shows us a handful of characters who have hated each other their whole lives but who still try to establish a friendship. A large mansion and a long table serve as a backdrop for a tense and very fragile negotiation wherever you see it. However, the camera moves away for a moment from the papers, the treaties and the conditions to focus the negotiators in their most empathic facet. We watched them drinking whiskey, sharing waffles, telling jokes and shaking hands. This is the miracle that no one, not even if I wanted to, would have ever imagined. Here it is revealed that even the worst adversaries, even those who just by looking at each other draw their weapons, can put aside their ideals and sit at the same table to share a delicious snack.

Idealism vs will

Idealismo vs voluntad

Another very interesting aspect of this feature film is the clear battle between two different idealisms and the same will to end a relentless war. On the one hand we have Ahmed Qurie, a finance minister outside his country who has put hatred aside to provide his most honest willingness to negotiate on behalf of the PLO, also known as the Palestinian Liberation Organization. There is also Uri Sarvir, a somewhat loutish Israeli who is very excited to talk for the first time in history with a head of the enemy state. Both know that the bullets and missiles have not solved anything, and despite recognizing each other as adversaries, they also understand each other as friends. They reflect a determination to recognize themselves, not only as states, but also as equals.

Mediators between bullets

Mediadores entre balas

Mona Juul and Terje Rod are the guiding characters behind this story of negotiations and agreements. Although at first they appear far from the table of conversations, ultimately they break that gap to give final shape to a historical treatise. Ruth Wilson and Andrew Scott fierce the spouses, carving in their eyes the need for a handshake to result from so many tensions. In my humble opinion Ruth was the best, if you have already seen this movie you will notice her peculiar facial gestures that create an atmosphere between the role she plays and the dramatic contour that surrounds the scene, something that undoubtedly leaves anyone fascinated.

Director Bartlett Sher reveals behind the camera a couple who, despite not having to worry about a conflict that does not concern them, do what is necessary for the parties to lay down their arms and achieve peace. The paradigm detonates from the first images of the film, where we see Mona witnessing an unprecedented event. This memory of her in particular helps him break even with her own belief in only serving as mediators rather than intervening in the negotiation. Oslo allows us to be the ones to judge the process, and in a way, we also want an end to so much violence.

Address and photograph.

Dirección y fotografía.

It's the first time I've seen a Bartlett Sher work, and to be honest the way she directed Oslo is carefully tailored to the conflict conveyed in the film. Photography is another curious aspect, since the tonalities of the image change according to the weather and the line of action in which the scenes take place, highlighting colors such as yellow for a somewhat tense conversation in an open-air restaurant in Israel. , a blue for the surroundings of the mansion of negotiations and a green for a fraternal walk of two men who decide to respect each other in the face of the freedom of a forest. These aspects allow you to become familiar with the environment of the events and produce a pleasant sensation in your eyes.

Why see Oslo?

¿Por qué ver Oslo?

Oslo is the closest reference to a conflict that has been palpitating for years, but for a brief moment seemed to come to an end. The essence of this film is not limited to showing us the secrets behind a historical negotiation process, but it teaches us the correct path of dialogue and understanding as the only weapon to end the war. We are all human beings, we carry within us the same red liquid and a heart that pumps it. Why fight each other when we can eat waffles and tell jokes as friends? The true will for peace is found, in the first place, in putting aside differences to coexist on a planet that rotates 365 days a year.
