After introducing the new ranked rewards system at the beginning of June (or was it the end of May?), and already tweaking it for the first time later after the first season passed, we are onto another major update for Splinterlands.

Everybody knew modern & wild formats are coming. @cryptomancer was in the last town hall talking about it. And the prediction was it will be released in July.

I don't know why, but when a month is brought up for launching something, I generally expect toward the end of it, at best. And I'm not speaking about Splinterlands here, but rather crypto in general.

So, when I saw the rather low-profile announcement, I was pretty surprised. Looks like we'll have modern & wild right after this season ends, on Thursday, July 14th.

The real question is which format will I play in?

In theory, new players will prefer the modern format because it features only the latest two main sets and associated mini-sets, while the old players will prefer the wild format because they have older cards too.

Also in theory, one can play for both formats, ranking up in both. But with the same ECR pool for both formats, that will be relatively complicated to rank in both formats high enough. We will see.

The reward pool will be doubled, one for wild and one for modern. So they won't share the same reward pool. That could incentivize some players to try both.

IF new players will prefer the modern format, that means it will be pretty crowdy because there are far more new players than old ones. So, the reward pool will be split among more people.

Which would make it logical for players who have a deck suited for the wild format to play there. The reward pool would be shared among fewer participants.

But with the rental market, you can't really know what the dynamic will be. At least hopefully that will reanimate the rental market a bit.

Looks like next season will be fun, lol!
