This is what most people believe, because it has "always been like that".

Whatever you search for on Google is likely to show top results for anything that is more than 300 word long articles though.

In theory, it should be easier for Google to understand what your content is about if you write longer articles rather than shorter, but anything above 300 words seems to be fine in terms of rankings.

While my personal recommendation is still to go for longer rather than shorter articles, it doesn't necessarily have to be 1000+ words. What's more important is the "meat". What information you share and how you present it (optimize it).
