There should always be an overall goal in business. But that alone isn't sufficient. You need to have immediate action plans - which are tactics. But the issue is that instead of most people to use both strategy and tactics; they choose one over the other as though they were very different. This disparity made by business people may be the reason for most business failures.

The ideal thing to do as a businessman is to align strategy and tactics. Understanding that you need both to succeed very well. Basically, strategy is your long term goals, while tactics is your short term action plans in order to achieve your long term goals. It's difficult to have one without the other.

And that's why it's so wrong, when an entrepreneur looks at the terms - strategy and tactics, like words from two very distinct worlds. They're quite more related than we'll like to admit. It's not possible to have a long term plan without creating short term active plans. If you make such long term plans without short term plans, that will be hardly achievable.

Both strategy and tactics in business are equally very important. And you should not make any one more important than the other. You should have plans for your business for a year and more from now. But also you should have action plans for daily activities in order to make your vision for the business come to fruition.

It's like you driving your car. Strategy is knowing where you're going to - that is, your destination. On the other hand, tactics is you handling the wheels, and making every turn correctly. When you have a good strategy for your business, and you also have a good tactics to help you with immediate actions in line with your overall strategy - you'll have a very high propensity of succeeding in that business of yours.
