How To Judge Success When The Outcome Is Not Apparent

‍Hello Friends,

When it comes to evaluating your progress, you’re probably used to specific and measurable outcomes. Whether that be hitting your quarterly goals, or tracking your progress towards a new objective. But what if there was no clear outcome? What if the goal you were striving for wasn’t something that could be measured with a single number? It’s fair to say that such situations can be challenging. But the good news is that there are ways to get through them. Here’s how:

Understand The Context Before Jumping In

You’ve identified an opportunity that could accelerate your business. Perhaps it’s an untapped customer base, or an overlooked opportunity. And you’re eager to dive in and start taking action. But before you do, it’s worth taking a step back and understanding the context of what you’re trying to achieve. Sometimes, we jump in without really thinking about it. We’re so eager to start making progress that we don’t stop to think about the context. We don’t pause to ask ourselves a few key questions:

  • Why are we trying to achieve this goal?
  • Who are we trying to achieve this with?
  • What are we trying to achieve by trying to achieve this goal?

And these questions don’t just apply to your next big opportunity. They should apply to any opportunity that you’re looking to take action on.

Set a clear goal

It can be tempting to jump straight into an action plan with no clear goal in mind. This is a mistake. Setting a clear goal is the first step towards success.

Why?

Setting a goal helps you frame the opportunity in the right context. It gives you a compass to use when navigating through your decision-making process. It gives you a yardstick by which to measure your progress. Setting a goal also forces you to think about who, what, why and how. These four key questions will help you frame your goal in the right context. Who are you trying to achieve this with? What are you trying to achieve by trying to achieve this goal? Why are you trying to achieve this goal? How are you trying to achieve this goal?

Track progress every step of the way

When you set a clear goal, you’re also setting yourself up to track your progress. Recording your actions helps you visualize your decision-making process. It helps you measure the distance you’ve traveled along the journey. It also gives you feedback to help you adjust along the way. You don’t have to take big leaps forward. You don’t have to overwhelm yourself with a million and one things to do. Just focus on taking small, manageable actions.

Focus on getting one thing done at a time. And as you do this, you’ll see how this builds momentum. You’ll see how this brings you one step closer to your goal.

Don’t be afraid to change course

Sometimes, you get there and you realize that the path you’re trying to walk is a dead end. This could be because your original goal was misguided, or it could be because the way you’re trying to achieve it is flawed. No matter the reason, it’s important to be honest with yourself and your team. It’s important to examine your goal and strategy and make any necessary adjustments.

This doesn’t mean giving up on your goal. It just means that you need to find a new way to get there. You need to find a new path. You need to find a new way to achieve your goal.

Be honest with yourself

If you didn't achieve the goal you set out to achieve, that's okay. What's important is that you learn from your mistakes and use that knowledge to make your next project even better. And don't forget to celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may seem. After all, it's the journey, not the destination, that counts.

Bottom line

When things are going well, the journey can be fun and exciting. It can be invigorating and empowering. It can be a great way to spend your time. But when things are going poorly, the journey can feel like a burden. It can feel like a burden that you’re trying to get away from. Throughout both scenarios there are key takeaways that you need to recognize and embrace. You need to remember that success is not about hitting a single number. It’s about making progress. And in order to make progress, you need to be realistic about your goals and your strategy. You need to be honest with yourself.

What do you think?

  • How do you judge the success of projects?
  • Do you have any advice for tracking success?
  • What do you do when you do not achieve your desired outcome?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I hope it helps you think about life in different ways.

Cheers
