First impressions they say last and that is true if we have to look back at some times in our lives when we have to meet people, it could have been a job interview, a business meeting, or even a potential boyfriend or girlfriend relationship.

So do truly put in the effort to make a positive lasting first impression that will motivate a second and continuous meeting? The answer might be yes but judging by some actions, they are contrary to a good first impression.

I have two women in my life in South Africa whom I consider my mom, I call them mom each time we speak, and though they are not my biological mom, they've both played some caring and loving roles in my life which I still appreciate to date.

So one of my moms wanted the shade in her garden renovated, the existing one is in ruin proving no shade at the moment, so she wants it replaced with see-through plastic roofing.

She entrusted me with the task of finding someone to get the job done. After I had gone to survey what needs to be done, two people immediately came to my mind, my neighbor who I don't trust if he can but he does those small renovation kinds of jobs like painting, etc.
The second person that came to mind was Anthony my ex-colleague.
Talk about being handy, Anthony is good!

The Quest To Land My Mom The Right Person For The Job

Mom entrusted me with this task back in December, especially after I told her am leaving the country, she asked me to help to get it done before I leave.

I approached my neighbor, he was just days away from traveling home to Zimbabwe for the Christmas holidays. So he couldn't help.

The first week of January I contacted Anthony seeing mom kept calling and reminding me. I set up an appointment with Anthony so I can take him to mom. Not only was he late which can be overlooked, but he also showed up at my place to pick me up drinking alcohol and driving.

I told him to please finish that alcohol before we arrive at mom's place. He responded,

Joe you still haven't changed all these years, always serious.

Seeing my reaction I wasn't amused, he said he will finish before we get to mom's. I was worried he will be smelling alcohol for me this is not going to be a pleasant meeting.

It turned out we met mom at the gate just going to the shop quickly before we arrived, she got into the car with us and we went to her place to see the job that needs doing. Anthony still had his unfinished bottle of beer with him.

Anthony sent a quotation, which I passed it on to mom and she has been quiet about when to get the job done. To be frank, I wouldn't be impressed with the kind of impression Anthony left if he was to come to do a job for me, you can't be drinking and driving which is illegal in the first place, and you can't do that when going to meet someone for a job either.

Screw First Impression

I never thought about writing about this until Sunday morning during my walk to church when I saw two guys. By the looks, they do garden jobs because they had a weed eater and some garden tools with them.

One stood at the gate of the premises trying to get the attention of the residents and the other sat smoking not a cigarette but weed, I looked with surprise as I observed what was going on.

I walked on and looked back again to be sure of what I just witnessed.

It appears some job seekers have no self-respect and lack respect for whom they seek to work for.

It might be a small job that doesn't earn thousands of income, but from experience, an opportunity could be missed when one shows up lacking courtesy.
