Learn to pass
There was a trending video on Twitter today, it was a video of world map displayed on a board, passerby were asked where is Ukraine on the map. You will be surprised how people don't know the world map. A link to the tweet here. When people start identifying Australia as Ukraine you get to wonder what happened to Geography at school.
I had a visit, from a newly high school graduate seconds after watching the video, interested on whether he is familiar with the world map or not I showed him the video, asked him to identify Ukraine, impressively he wasn't far off where Ukraine is on the map, in fact he identified Kazakhstan as Ukraine which was my pick as well before having a thorough check.
The conversation went on over the topic, the school was to be blame for me, Thabang responded world map wasn't taught at school which isn't the case with me back in high school, I learned about world map from school.
What struck me during our chat was when he said learn to pass
He meant most things being taught in schools are irrelevant and unpractical to real world use. I was impressed with the lad, I only realize how irrelevant most things taught in school are later in life. Take for example doing short courses with Coursera, it is more of straight to the point, self-paced over shorter duration of time.
When it come to financial literacy it is one hell of a mess than identifying Australia as Ukraine on world map, the consequence being majority of the world population are languishing in debt.
With all the years spent in school we still fail to excel or have fundament knowledge on the most basic of practical things needed in life. A critical look of things will tell you financial literacy is a very important subject that is missing in our schools. I see no reason why a learner wouldn't take interest in looking out for Iran on the map knowing it is a top 10 world oil producing country in relation to finance.
The reality kicks in when learn to pass doesn't get result in real life. Practical results are what counts, to get results a lot of learning and unlearning is required. The basic school education are a must requirement for everyone, it is our educational stepping stone in life generally. In spite of that the time, money spent acquiring this schooling education doesn't get us fully equipped to take on life.
A reevaluation of our educational system is long overdue, however some are waking up to acquiring skills and knowledge needed from the internet and in some cases at no financial cost.
