Yesterday, I went to sign some documents that were required to rent a property and the man in charge was talking about how people need to embrace 9 to 5 jobs as the only option was internet fraud after this.

I looked at the cost of rent and the cost of maintenance, plus the cost of other utility requirements that came with this property and I wondered how someone with a 9 to 5 job would be able to secure such an apartment and continue the payments with the level of unemployment, cost-push inflation against the increase in salaries, or the minimum wage and its redundancies.

In Nigeria, the number of 9 to 5 jobs that can comfortably allow people to live well irrespective of the inflation and still allow them to save for a better future is in the ratio of 1 to 10,000.

The Power Of Being Connected

When you have 10,000 people vying for a very lucrative job, along the way, the job is being given to a person that's got the personal connection or relativity to the people who are tasked with offering these.

Nigeria is a country where people depend on degrees to escape poverty, so we have less innovative people whose cannot come up with ideas that can change the narrative and depopulate the labor market.

The government itself is not enlightened enough as to how the effect of digitization can help solve the job scarcity problems, this is why digipreneurship is often mistaken for internet fraud.

The Real Consequences Of Ignorance

Let's be factual, ignorance is the reason why many people will remain poor in the face of deprivation. Being educated isn't being enlightened.

The current generation hasn't done well in the aspect of enlightening the next generation, rather there's we have an uneducated society with less enlightened people, the mental capacity of the average Nigerian isn't wide enough beyond their nomenclature, this is why people are choosing to get education in other to secure a lucrative 9 to 5 jobs.

Now if everyone is aiming to do this, there's going to be a situation where we'll have a very little number of people who owns the jobs and controls huge income, while we'll have more unemployed people who feel that becoming an entrepreneur is settling for less.

The Main Monetary Focus

The focus is on oil and the aim of every young unemployed Nigerian is to work in the oil sector, with a big house and fat salary to their name.

The country itself isn't structured to encourage digipreneurship this is because of the rate of internet fraud and having a government that's more focused on politicking rather than the quality of life of their citizens.

So it falls in the hand of people to take care of themselves and sometimes it's hard to do it in a country with no structural framework. The main reason for this post is to highlight the fact that there's the opinion that 9 to 5 doesn't just foster legality, but there's the expectancy that whatever salary that comes out of it should be enough for people to thrive and still save for the future.

A Side Hustle & Its Inevitability

Majorly, people take care of their expenditures by doing something extra on the side, and sometimes, the time that's required from most 9 to 5 jobs doesn't just limit people, it takes away their abilities to make extra income to fight the influx of inflation. This is the reason why some people work very hard but they're still poor and stagnated.

This is to say that owning most 9 to 5 jobs in Nigeria isn't to liberate people from poverty, it's to just keep them afloat. So most people aren't working to be financially free, they're doing so to be live.

This takes away their quality of life. At the end of the day, it boils down to the lack of innovativeness flowing from the government down to the citizens. To be enlightened, a person must be abreast of the constancy in global evolution. This is where the system has failed woefully.
