Control of free speech has been unofficial in Nigeria for quite a long time, things like constructive criticism is considered hate speech, it started in the military era where the military personnel in office controlled journalism and what's officially stated as the truth. What the media served the people was what was deemed to have been filtered in the military era and of course it was so because democracy was something that would come decades later. Nigeria started her democratic journey in 1999 and even after 21 years things like the supremacy of the constitution and free speech has not been fully enacted even as sophisticated as democracy seems nowadays. The Chinese's practice of total control of everything media is a testament to the fact that we may never see total liberalism to free speech completely in the world even in generations to come.

Currently, Nigeria is contemplating on banning platforms like twitter, the issue was first raised by ex-presidential aspirant Adamu Garba and was seconded by Desmond Elliot a member of the Lagos state house of assembly. Adamu on his part felt Jack Dorsey should be sued for inciting his audience against a sovereign government while Elliott felt microblogging on twitter has taken a twist and that the Nigerian government might decide banning or censoring the use of twitter claiming people only use it to curse and rant. The truth is, places like twitter serves as a medium to get out the injustice that's meted to people in African countries. We can't begin to talk about police brutality and how people have constantly become aware of happenings in the state of the nation.

In reality, the federal government of Nigeria is hoping to keep external bodies away from what's happening in Nigeria and they intend to do this by banning medias of communication. It's an extended format of free speech and committing injustice by a sovereign government is a different thing but then trying to hide it under the stance that it instigates people against the government is what's anti human and I consider this backwardness. Nigeria is one of the richest countries by far one of the biggest oil producing states part of (OPEC) and other notable mineral resources including the vast amount of wealth from exportation of agricultural produce. The nation has enough wealth to be like the UAE or even the US in terms of GNP rather then GDP.

This stance by the government will actually stand but then suggesting it already in the open shows they've been considering it behind lock and key. It's safe to say the world is only getting to find out what's happening in Nigeria through the media and the government hasn't been transparent about it. China is one country where you'll find a whole lot of secrecy going on and then they seem to censor it by not allowing their citizens socially interact with the rest of the world. I know fake agenda can be pushed through the media, I get the protesting in Nigeria has taken a different twist and different stats are being reported in the media. But it's safe to say that the Nigerian government is one of the most corrupt in the world, the killings at the lekki toll gate has been underreported and no one is coming to claim responsibility as to who eventually send out soldiers to shoot at unarmed citizens.

A lot of people will be put in jail, I mean government personnels but there's so much secrecy and currently the people who ordered the killings will go scot free and police brutality plus corrupt government will eventually continue. Money laundering and abuse of power or office. It's safe to say what government needs isn't a regulations of social media, it's setting constitutional laws that will stipulate to reduce the salaries that are earned by the national assembly members. Operate a unicameral legislature and of course start sentencing politicians to prison. It's Safe to say that control and interference is what makes corruption eats deep. The government wants to silence the people become the medias threatens to become an avenue to expose the illicit practices of government not because it instigates people against the government.

Conclusion

So far reforms is needed to change Nigeria, and not the personnel in government. The constitution don't just need to change, the rule of law needs to be enacted and this can be done through proper check and balance of all the arms of government. The office of the commander in chief needs to be split, this might mean Nigeria might begin to operate a parliamentary system of government because the commander-in-chief In Nigeria operates with too much power and in such a situation as this one what's happening in Nigeria it might warrant him being impeached by a vote of "no-confidence". However it's needless to say that Nigeria has the worst leadership since it's history and there's the propaganda that our president might be a clone afterall and this British knows this.
