How About ... Creating your Own AI Powered Assistant? Presenting character.ai
Hello my friends! I am here today to share with you a fun discovery of an AI program that will probably excite you as much as it excited me :)
Introducing .. Character.ai.
I saw it in a blog post by a friend and it immediately intrigued me. Why would it be so important? We already have ChatGPT and other AI apps. Many of them actually. Too many to be mentioned in one post. So I decided to go by and check it out myself.
What is character.ai?
In the words of the creators:
Character.AI is bringing to life the science-fiction dream of open-ended conversations and collaborations with computers.
We are building the next generation of dialog agents; with a long-tail of applications spanning entertainment, education, general question-answering and others.
Our dialog agents are powered by our own proprietary technology based on large language models, built and trained from the ground up with conversation in mind.
How does the Character.AI beta work?
The Character.AI beta is based on neural language models. A supercomputer reads huge amounts of text and learns to hallucinate what words might come next in any given situation. Models like these have many uses including auto-complete and machine translation.
So in essence:
At Character.AI, you collaborate with the computer to write a dialog - you write one character's lines, and the computer creates the other character's lines, giving you the illusion that you are talking with the other character.
Attention though:
Needless to say, a hallucinating supercomputer is not a source of reliable information. Still, we hope that you find Character.AI a useful tool for imagination, brainstorming, language learning, and a host of other purposes we have not yet imagined :) source

I was also confused and to he honest I was trying to find why this should interest me.
I tried to discuss with an 'assistant' character but I saw that if I am not signed up, there are limited questions I can ask.
Signing up!
I asked a few simple questions and then I decided to (a) sign up and (b) explore what other possibilities there are!
You can sign up using any of these options. I will choose email at the moment and go on.
You will need to confirm your email and then choosing your username (which you may change later) and move on.
Click on 'join character' and then you are ready to start doing .. your anything!
You will also see that the app remembers your previous chat.
Important - Are the conversations private?
That was my initial question, so I searched for it before starting asking strange queries.

There are privacy settings on Characters you create, and options when you post, that control whether that content is public (visible to anyone) or just visible to you. If you create a Character or post that will be seen by the community, mods might review to evaluate potential negative impact. You should see the Privacy Policy for details.
I invite you to go over the FAQs before proceeding or if you plan to share any sensitive information.
Choose your AI Character to discuss with!
You will see a range of categories and clicking on each one will bring over more characters.
Clicking on a character opens the conversation with them, and the number depicts the number of conversations already. No wonder why Elon Musk has more than 3.4 m discussions :)
I chose Tony Start (you may know him as Iron Man) and had a short conversation with him.
His responses were sensible.. do you agree?
He was created by a user who made many different characters
We see that we can follow users if we want.

When you click create you see the options 'character' or 'room'

Final Words
This seems to be a very exciting tool, I see it in a few solutions such as a website assistant, a hive assistant, and potentially a lot more (but I need to read the book first to see the full potential)
This could also be useful for generating new ideas for just about anything!
