“Black birds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven

Enough! I’d rather be marooned on a desert Isle than listen to more belly aching between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard! With Johnny fired from his role as Jack Sparrow, Pirates of the Caribbean will not be the same.

It’s since October 2021 since I made my first post of this coin series, back then I’ve semi-sworn an oath to get only one Dutchman coin because I wasn’t very impressed with the lack of texture & depth of the reverse that left nae ship or captain resulted as mere 2D caricatures, barely recognizable.

You need only to behold that bilge rat royal on the Obverse then you can see which side the New Zealand mint rather put their resources into.

I’m sure Disney got their hefty licensing cut of the premium so what could I do to convince Disney to fix this QA problem? Hmmm? 🤔

Two years later…

"WPLG 10 News in Ft. Lauderdale received a news report of a night-time theft that took place in the Bahamas at Disney’s Castaway Cay cruise ship terminal. The daring crime took place between 2 and 3 am under an overcast early morning. Cruise Security is baffled how that happened under their regular rounds but blamed it partly on the rolling blackouts in this summer’s peak demand in expensive electricity rationing due to President Biden’s unworkable Conservation program that has now sinking him to about 4% in popularity polls.

“I was doing my rounds when the lights went out around 2 am and by the time the lights came back, pft the Dutchman was gone dude!”, said the unnamed source.

Stolen was a Disney’s stage prop of their flailing franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Flying Dutchman. And here’s what the stage prop appears like. Should you or any member of the American public spots this, please report it to the Coast Guard or immediate authorities as soon as possible."

"Disney world spokes person Emmot Schwartz assures that the perpetrator will be caught, and the Dutchman be recovered. “Disney Corporation has put a considerable amount of investment into our production equipment to bring to the public top quality family entertainment and merchandise.”

Mr. Schwartz also revealed a clue to the perpetrator’s identity in the form of a note found in an empty Captain Morgan rum bottle. Uncorked and the note unfurled it said, “Dear Mr. Disney cabin boy, here are me demands, If yea wants to see yer precious Flying Dutchman then make the $2 Niue Pirates of the Caribbean silver coins more up to snuff, that is …‘Top quality merch.’ Reduce yea cut by 50% and hire back Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Or the Dutchman will swim with the fishes, Yours Truly, The Bloody Raven ☠️🙂"

"Sigh, only in my dreams."

While Disney takes substantial liberties around the feared ghost ship of Davy Jones, first is that Jones is not Dutch, here's a bit of bird's eye view.

The origin of the Flying Dutchman remains obscure since it's name was first uttered in the 1600s. She was a Dutch ship but her registry and construction unknown. Even her demise is speculation at best. One story having the stricken merchant ship dashed by a storm while she awaits her pilot to guide her into the safe Cape town harbor only to perish with all hands. Another story has her crew accused of a heinous crime and or overcome with a pestilence such that many ports refused her entry. And thus, condemned to sail the seas in an eternal penance.

Imagined or genuine, sworn personal sightings of this vessel have been reported for hundreds of years and are claimed to appear in the midst of a tempest or an omen appearing before misfortune.

So much subjective scuttlebutt had circulated long before any facts can make it to print. It's no wonder historians have so much to sort out let alone determining should she even existed at all. Intriguing. Mysterious. The ghostly legend of the Flying Dutchman continues to represent the mariner's and landlubber's collective fear of the seas.

I think my suggestion to Disney Corporation will fall on deaf ears so I will continue to complete the minimum set of this series. The only way that I will get more than one is when they are priced comparable with generic rounds rather than an overpriced official licensed product.

Adding Silver and Crypto coins in my Stack for that rainy day, are you?”
