“Black birds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven

There are times to go BIG on a silver coin, round, or bar purchase. I don’t necessarily mean stacking a large quantity of pieces. But when you’re after design esthetics at a reasonable cost I may have something here for you.

Some coins have great designs that may seem mediocre on a typical One-ounce size but appear far more exquisite in the larger 5, 10, or larger versions. The 2021 Queen’s Beast Completer is an example where the One Kilo sized coin superseded that of its smaller coin in quality and detail.

The principal is that larger coins have better quality in it’s details and may just be worth the extra marginal expense. Today’s example is Golden State Mint’s Aztec Sun Stone Calendar round where I skipped past the 1 and 2 oz. Versions and went for the 5 oz size and hope my camera can get the lovely details.

Sister Teresa D’Mordecai; Revenge Part 16

October 1821 Veracruz

The golden setting sun marked the completion of the grape harvest, the former Loyalist general now Vice Governor Samuel Oréaga hands his empty glass of wine to his villa servant before waving her off. From his balcony he could watch the merchant ships anchored offshore bringing goods and news from Spain. Probably more bad news of capitulation to the cursed insurgents and rebels. His gaze shifted to inside his spacious villa observing his field workers file past his paymaster's gate for the hard day's work. Natural Spanish born workers are paid their Reale, half breeds a half Reale and the remaining four coppers each, slave wages.

There was less grumbling among their ranks tonight as the workers were allowed to depart an hour early in preparation for their annual Day of the Dead celebrations. "Here, the peasants know their place and order in the world!" Oréaga chuckled, "The rebels may have won but in Veracruz things still remain the same."

The Vice Governor dwelt again upon his past failure to take the entire St. Angeléasta gold and silver hoard or discover the whereabouts of the mine from where the hoard was sourced. The Insurgency would have been stopped in its tracks and Mexico would have remained firmly under Spain and perhaps himself as the new Viceroy and the St. Angeléasta hoard would have got him there. The real power and wealth. Things would be different under him.

Orèaga felt an unexpected chill as he stepped back into his lavish hacienda. Even with all the oil lamps fully lit the spacious hall seemed darker than usual. His great grandfather's old-styled conquistador armor guarded one end of the hall opposite to his own Cuirasseur's Cavalry officer's armor decorated with medals that displayed his most glorious achievements.

The doors to his private study were left ajar. It was never to be left open and all his servants knew it as akin to his private 'throne' room. Perhaps another sloppy avenger that held a grudge against him, often a relative or associate of some past kill. He has faced many who sought vengeance in past encounters over opinion, perhaps over a woman or two, and at times personal honor. But most often over loyalties in war where honor dueling, he had already honed to an art. The war was over, but these young brats still come at any time of the day and night to satiate their revenge only to die at his feet.

He could hear the familiar creaking of the floorboards, the shift of his study chair, then the shuffling and rustling of papers. "This intruder is not very quiet, Si?" Oréaga first reached for his pistol but shifted to his favorite Spanish dueling sword from his armor and fastened it to his waist. It just wouldn't be sporting.

He kissed his crucifix before slipping it into his shirt, then steps into the open doors to face his opponent. Darkness. He scans his study knowing where everything is. "In the name of his excellency King Ferdinand the VII, who is it that intrudes into my peaceful hacienda? In whose name do you come to avenge?

The squeak of the chair shifted his gaze to the center of the study, where his desk stood. The sound of a match scratches along the desktop, a small burst of a flame alights the wick of one oil lamp casting an amber hue across the desk illuminating the right half of her masked face. Then she lights the other oil lamp and adjusts both wicks to properly illuminate the room.

Standing up from his chair she appeared dressed like that of a Nun’s habit. The odd and contradictory sight of also wearing a ferocious mask and having a sword at her side kept his hand upon the hilt of his sword.

She spoke through her mask, “You left this at the Cemetery.” She tosses a heavy silver bar at the former officer’s feet.
Oréaga picks up the bar, the marks of Angel’s Wings identify them as the St. Angeléasta hoard. “Where did you get this?” Looking up he was startled to see her now standing in front of the desk only six feet separate them, “How did you do that so quick and quietly?”

The strange Nun removed her mask and spoke clearly, and it was a familiar voice from the past. “Now, I shall answer your first question.” “You are that teaching Nun of St Angeléasta, but you are dead!”

“I am former Sister Teresa D’Mordecai of the St Angeléasta Convent. I have returned from the dead to avenge the execution death of my beloved José María Teclo Morelos Pérez y Pavón by your hand. Defend yourself.” After refastening her mask, her black blade slipped out of its sheath with an eerie shrill of a thousand black birds.
