THE STRUGGLES THAT COME WITH JOB HUNTING

I recently went to a job interview and had to wait almost eight hours to get interviewed, the crazy thing about this was that it was a role that I didn’t care about but since it was recommended to me and I felt like I had high chances of getting the job, I went, sucked it up, and waited for my turn.

In that same interview, I met so many people with so many degrees that didn’t even come close to what we were applying for, there were doctors, engineers, accountants and guess what, they were all going for a marketing role.

It is appalling because this is sadly the norm in the Nigerian job market and with the high rate of unemployment people would gladly scramble and even fight to get a job that has nothing to do with what they studied just to earn a living.

Another struggle that I have experienced and am familiar with all too well is business owners and organizations using the high rate of unemployment as a reason to overwork and underpay their employees because in their head “there will always be someone willing to work”.

People have also taken the advantage to sell openings for jobs and even resulted to asking for sexual favors just to give people jobs, and it is crazy because this trend isn’t coming to an end anytime soon with the current inflation and state of the economy and as someone who is actively job searching, some of these things thoroughly disappoint me.

At this point, I have resulted that the best way to get jobs in Nigeria is by either making connections in certain organizations or making your curriculum vitae look like it was made by the gods, and even with these factors in place, it can still be very difficult.

In the end, I will advise everyone actively job-hunting to be creative and open-minded because while it isn’t easy and it comes with a lot of challenges, it is still very possible to get a good-paying job even with the economy as it is.

It is also essential while job hunting to figure out a way to get other streams of income because it could take some time to get something worth it with the amount of rubbish in the job market and a lot of finances are necessary to keep up the job hunt.
