Crypto Noobs #21 - How to Secure Your Hive Account Without Having Another Account

If you've never read a Crypto Noobs post, it's a series where I show people how to do different things with cryptocurrency and blockchain. I'm just a regular dude that admittedly smokes too much and likes to be a complete degenerate with crypto. I'm no expert, I just like to spread knowledge. In the last issue, we looked at how you can earn passive income with your Splinterlands cards. Today we're talking about securing your Hive account!
Hive Account Recovery
I've talked about a lot of different things in this series such as how to yield farm on different blockchains, and how to move funds between said blockchains. One thing that can't be talked about enough though is account security. If Hive is your introduction to cryptocurrency, or if you're just not aware... But PeakD will prompt you to change your Hive recovery account if you've never done so. By default if you were here in the Steemit days, your recovery account is set to @steem. This means that if you lose access to your private account keys, you're in a bad situation.
There's no native way to recover your account without having another account set as the recovery account. The only issue I have with this is that not everyone has a second Hive account or someone that they trust to be the recovery account for their wallet. We're dealing with cryptocurrency. We're dealing with money. Security is something that needs to be taken very seriously in this kind of space.
If you have another Hive account, no problem. Just visit the Keys & Permissions page via PeakD and you can set your recovery account to another account that you control. You can also set it to someone you trust to be able to help recover your account. I dunno about you, but I'd much rather be in control of the account that is going to be potentially used to recover my main account. The good thing is that even if you don't have another account that you feel comfortable using as a recovery account, you can use @arcange's service Hive Account Recovery.
Since I don't have another account that I can use as the recovery account and I don't trust anyone, I'm going to show you how to use this service. It's very easy and will save you a lot of headache down the road in the event that your account is compromised or anything like that. Here's how ya do it.
On the website linked above, enter your Hive username. Then fill out the form.
You'll need to enter your master password, which is something you set up when you created your Hive account. Then your email address that you actually use, not a junk one. Lastly, you'll enter a secret phrase that only you would know. Literally anything, but please write it down.
If you don't have your master password, unfortunately there's no way to use the service as it is a requirement. Once you've entered all the information in the form, check the "I have saved my secret passphrase". Again, write it down!
Once you've submitted, you'll have to wait 30 days for your recovery accoutn to be updated. There's nothing more for you to do beyond this point but wait. Now you can rest easy knowing your recovery account isn't @steem anymore. Now all you need to recover your account is this tool.
If the time comes when you need to recover your account, you can follow the original guide here. It's pretty straightforward and easy to use. You just need to make sure you have all the information you entered in the initial form.
Having a good recovery account or service is critical to the security of your account. You don't want to have your account compromised and potentially lose money. This will help you prevent that from ever happening. Remember: Your Hive account is your wallet. If you lose access to your Hive account, your money is gone. Don't let it happen to you.
