Ever heard of NFT domain names?

If you're not an NFT/crypto nerd like myself, odds are you have no idea what an NFT domain name is. Don't worry though, it's not rocket science so don't click away from this article just yet. When you think of domain names, you probably think of something like "leofinance.io" or "twitter.com". These are traditional web2 domains that are used every day and serve basically one purpose - displaying a website. The cool thing is - with NFT and blockchain technology, we're able to give domains superpowers.

Typically, when you purchase a domain name, you have to pay fees and hosting costs to keep that domain. Turn that domain name into an NFT on the blockchain, and you own it forever with no fees. Wanna resell the NFT domain? Cool, no problem. It's as simple as listing any other NFT for sale on whatever marketplace. Unstoppable Domains makes everything nice and seamless for their users.

You might be wonder.... "Well, that's cool you own the domain on the blockchain, but what other benefits are there?". That's a fair question. The thing about blockchain and NFT technology is that it's very new, meaning it's constantly improving. Your NFT domain can not only host a website, but it can also be linked to all your crypto wallets across different blockchains. So if Joe wants to send you some ETH, he can simply type your domainname.crypto and send it rather than trying to make sure he correctly types your random string of letters and numbers.

Talk about simple, right? Joe can even send Bitcoin or HIVE to the same address domainname.crypto, and it will resolve to your corresponding linked address. Mind blown yet?

Unstoppable Domains works in a similar fashion to GoDaddy, where you simply type the domain you would like. The website then finds available domains and lists their prices. If another user owns the domain, it will let you know that it's taken. If they have the domain for sale, it will allow you to purchase directly from the owner. There's quite a few different options for the end of the domain as well, for example you can choose from .crypto, .nft, .blockchain, and more.

If you look at my profile or have seen me in Discord, you'll notice that my username is now 0xNifty.nft. I wanted to own something that really felt right in terms of a domain name, and a lot of the ones I tried were taken or too expensive. I knew I wanted something that ended with .nft though, because I am working on a project and it kinda fits.

Because these NFT domains are now minted on the Polygon blockchain rather than directly on Ethereum, there are zero gas fees. I did not expect this when I decided I wanted to mint one of them, so I was prepared for some ETH gas fees. Not knowing what gas fees were going to look like, I had about $10 worth of ETH ready and I actually ended up being able to use that to purchase the domain instead.

Will I be hosting a website at the address? I dunno, maybe. I have a ton of my NFT wallets linked to it so I'm considering doing an NFT gallery for the lols. Really not sure what I want to do with it. For now, it's a way for me to truly own my decentralized identity and consolidate some wallets. Some dapps even support logging in with your Unstoppable Domain, so I'm excited to test that out.

I can imagine tons of ways that NFT domains can be useful, it's just going to take time for more people to realize. Things like reputation, digital ownership, and humanity verification are all possible when you own an Unstoppable Domain. I highly recommend grabbing yours before someone else does. If you're interested in getting yourself a shiny new NFT domain, consider using my referral link.

What do you think? Do you own an NFT domain?

Thanks for reading! Much love.
