An expense that reflects the price of purchasing goods, services and financial instruments. If cash is involved in the process, then it is a "cash cost".
With an asset, cost is the purchase price which establishes the baseline for capital gains or losses.
There are two types for accounting purposes:
- Fixed
- Variable
Costs are recorded as expenses on the income statement
