A portion of a company profits that are paid to shareholders. It is commonly issued out on an annual basis and given to holders of common and preferred stock holders. Dividends are often expressed in percent terms. A $50 stock price that pays a $5 annual dividend is said to be paying a 10% dividend.
Dividends are paid on a per share basis.
