LeoGlossary: Holding Company
Also known as a parent company.
A holding company is one that has the holding of securities from other companies as its primary business. There is no goods produced or services provided. The only reason for its existence is to hold shares in other corporations, forming a corporate group.
These are often referred to as parent companies also. While they do hold stock in other companies, in some jurisdictions, these can conduct trade and other business activities.
Holding companies can reduce risk for shareholders and allow the ownership of a number of different companies. This percentage of the companies held could result in the holding company having control over them.
In the United States, financial and bank holding companies are regulated by the Federal Reserve.
