In a role-playing game, the player assumes the role of a character, often in a fantasy or science-fiction world, taking control of many actions of the character.

The game often includes a level-based evolution of the character. A tree-based skill evolution can be part of the mix. Also, quite commonly, an evolution of the equipment that can be used by the character is included in the gameplay.
