Short for Standard and Poor's 500.
A stock market index that contains 500 U.S. companies. These companies are large cap and the index shows market performance by reflecting these firms risks and rewards.
Any company's value is determined by dividing the its market capitalization by the entire market cap.
This is one of the most widely followed metrics for stock market performance.
