A company that issues stock does so by putting out a certain number of shares. This is the number of units that make up the total for the company.
When an individual is a shareholder, he or she is really the owner of a certain number of shares in a particular stock.
Shares can be traded on exchanges such as the NYSE or NASDAQ or Over-The-Counter (OTC).
