Is Splinterlands a good investment? 20 months later...

The major difference between a traditional, centralized game and a blockchain-based game is that a traditional game only gives you fun while a blockchain game, in addition to fun, also allows you to gain ownership of game elements such as tokens and NFTs that you can sell, rent or buy.
Splinterlands is my favorite blockchain based game and it's been more than 20 months since the day I decided to pay the $10 entry fee (October 19, 2019) and start my adventure in the world of blockchain based games.
Splinterlands like all blockchain based games allows the purchase of tokens and NFT using various methods of purchase and for this reason is not only a game but also an investment.
Every month I write a report in which I analyze Splinterlands only from a financial point of view and I calculate the ROI and any profit or loss that I have made so far.
Note: In the numbers in this report the comma "," and the dot "." are both decimal separators.

Final Result Previous Report
* The starting point for this report of mine on Splinterlands is the result I recorded in my previous monthly report.
Since four months my profit and ROI continues to grow and in the following two images you can see the trend of Profit and ROI that I have achieved in 19 months (until May 27, 2021).
Against an investment of $336 I got a total profit of 1239.77 and a ROI of 368.60%.
I've been really busy this month and didn't have time to do the calculations before so this report of mine is for a period longer than a month (45 days). I evaluate my investment on Splinterlands while writing my report and now it's time to see if I will have a positive or negative result compared to the previous report. **
Evaluation of Splinterlands as an Investment

To evaluate any investment you must always calculate and compare costs and revenues.
Below I will calculate the total costs I have incurred to date and the total revenue I have earned to date.

Total Cost of Investment
The total cost of my investment on Splinterlands is given by the following sum:
**Entry Cost (Starter Set: 10$) + Total Cost of Cards Purchased + Total Cost of DEC Purchased + Total Cost of Plots Purchased
From the date of my last report (May 27, 2021) and through today July 10, 2021:

I purchased, just before Sold Out, 100 packs of Untamed cards from the Shop section of Splinterlands using 200000 DEC tokens as my payment method. I received +10 free Untamed packs (bonus) and spent $1.65 per pack of cards with a total spend of $181.7695 (1.65245 110).

I rented during the last days of the last 3 seasons of Splinterlands some cards from Peakmonsters market (https://peakmonsters.com/) and I spent in total: 6.03$ (1.99$ + 1.92$ + 2.12$).
Since the date of my last report (May 27, 2021) I have spent a total of $187.79. The $187.79 produces an increase in the total cost of my Splinterlands investment which is now given by the following sum:
total investment cost previous report + cost to purchase packs of Untamed cards + cost to rent cards for the season finale.
336.35$ + 187.79$ = 524.14$.

Revenues

In the game of Splinterlands, revenues consist of:
- the market value of the **Cards that compose a collection of cards
- the value obtained from the sale of the cards
- the value of the DEC (Dark Energy Crystal) tokens accumulated and not reinvested.
- the value obtained from the sale of DEC tokens.
- the market value of the purchased plots.
- The value obtained from the sale of the plots.
- The value obtained from the use of DEC tokens in a Farm.
How much are my cards worth?
To know the total value in dollars of my cards collection I always use the useful tool of the Peakmonsters site (https://peakmonsters.com/@libertycrypto27/collection) that inside the Collection** section gives the calculation of the value of my cards collection.
The peakmonsters site calculates the value of my collection based on two different prices: **Market Prices and List Prices. To calculate the value of my card collection I always consider the lesser of:
- the total value using Market Prices.
- the total value using the List Prices**.
Note: In the calculation of revenues these two values are estimated values because both consider the case in which the cards are sold all at the prices indicated.
In reality there are cards that are easier to sell and others that are less easy to sell (the cards that have a very high market price), but until now I have always managed to sell all the cards that I put on the market at the lowest market price.
If I wanted to calculate the precise value of my collection of cards I would have to consider only the BID Price (the value immediately monetizable) for each card in my collection and the calculation would become very time consuming because my collection of cards is provided by 1717 cards (5059 BCX) and for this reason I am satisfied with an approximation.
On March 26, 2021 my card collection had a value of $819.63 (using Market prices)
On May 3, 2021 my card collection had a value of **1164.44 $ (using Market prices)

Today July 10, 2021 my card collection has a value of **2511.49 $ (using Market prices)

In my previous report I had recorded an increase in value (+ $184.65) but in this report the increase is truly remarkable: +$1162.4. The cards of Splinterlands continue to increase their value especially the Legendary cards and the Gold cards. This increase in value is really extraordinary because it happened in about 45 days. Since the date of my last report I have invested $187 and I haven't even opened all the Untamed packs I have purchased: I still have 47 packs to open. There is also a bit of luck in this increase. Yesterday I participated in a giveaway organized on youtube by @hardrockcrypto and the great hiver @dexpartacus and I won a card of great value: Scarred LLama Mage (level 1) whose current value is 59.40$.

How much are the DEC tokens I have on my wallet worth?
The DEC (Dark Energy Crystal) are the Tokens native of the game of Splinterlands, they are obtained as a reward for each battle won within the game and can be found inside the chests that you receive every day as a reward for the completion of daily missions and as a reward for the result obtained at the conclusion of the seasons of Splinterlands (every 15 days). DEC tokens are utility tokens because they have many use cases:
- they can be sold and bought on HiveEngine/LeoDex/TribalDex
- can be used to buy cards, potions, starter sets (Spell book)
- they can be used in the DeFi platforms of CubFinance and UniSwap
- can be used to rent cards
- will have a weight during the next airdrop of Splinterlands governance tokens (SPS tokens)
To date, I have accumulated a total of 79272 DEC tokens on my in-game Splinterlands wallet (previous month: 121077 DEC tokens).
As you can see from the calculations in the following image, today 10 July 2021, *79272 DEC tokens have the value of 90.75 $ (Highest Bid on LeoDex/HiveEngine/TribalDex)

Revenues from sale of DEC tokens on Hive Engine
Since I have been a member on Splinterlands, I have used DEC tokens primarily to purchase cards from the marketplace for the purpose of upgrading and improving my card collection. Only on one occasion have I decided to sell DEC tokens to power up on Hive and increase my amount of HP (Hive Power). On October 5, 2020, I sold 81000 DECs on the Hive Engine marketplace and received 400.14 HIVE in return for a value at the time of sale of $64.8**.
Today 400 HIVE is worth much more than $64.8 but I prefer to consider the value they had at the time I got them from the sale of the DEC tokens.

How much are my Plots worth?
On November 21, 2020 I purchased 3 Plots at a great price: 7500 DEC per plot. So I spent a total of 22500 DEC whose $ value at the time of purchase was 19.66 $**.
The plots until a few days ago could be purchased directly from the Splinterlands website at the price of $20 but now they are finished and you can only buy them on markets outside the game as on LeoDex/HiveEngine/TribalDex. At the time of writing this post the best sale offer of a Plot on Hive Engine is 110 HIVE equivalent to 34.65$. Those interested in buying a Plot can either buy it immediately at this price or can try to make a BID to hopefully get a lower price.
In calculating my profit I take into account the value of the best bid (Highest BID) on https://hive-engine.com/?p=market&t=PLOT which is 87.1 HIVE.
The total value of the three plots in my possession is 87.1 HIVE * 3 plots = 261.3 HIVE = 83.09$ (previous report value: 51.87$) *
Farm DEC-USBD LP
CubFinance (https://cubdefi.com/) is a decentralized finance platform created and developed by one of Hive's most active communities: the Leofinance** community. On CubFinance I use the Farm DEC-USBD LP in which I put 24000 DECs to work.
So far I have obtained 7,497 CUB tokens which have a value of $6,066.

Now I have all the data I need (Total Costs and Total Revenues) to calculate the Profit or Loss and ROI that I have obtained after 20 months of play and investment on Splinterlands.

Final Considerations
* The result I have recorded in this report is the best result I have recorded so far. A profit increase of almost 1000$ in 45 days is really a result I did not expect. I'm more and more happy that I decided 20 months ago to start my gaming adventure on Splinterlands and my big and only regret is that I didn't start earlier but when Splinterlands was born I didn't know at all the meaning of Blockchain based game.
I firmly believe that blockchain based games will be the future of videogames and I expressed my thoughts in a post I wrote a short time ago.

But do those who sign up today still have a chance to make a good profit?
* Obviously when a blockchain based game is as successful as Splinterlands those who signed up earlier have earned much more than those who signed up after several months. If I had signed up for Splinterlands from day one my profit would most likely be 0 more. I have been recommending Splinterlands for 20 months for two reasons:
- it is a fun game
- it offers so many possibilities of profit
Splinterlands can be played totally free of charge but in order to be eligible to receive in-game rewards (DEC and NFT tokens) you need to pay the $10 signup fee (Spellbook). The advice I give to people who have just signed up to Splinterlands is to participate in the contests that the account @splinterlands organizes every week because with the participation in the contests you can receive a maximum of two votes per week from the account @steemmonsters and the cost of registration to the game is recovered in a short time only and thanks to the participation in the weekly contests.
In the following image you can see the vote I received from Splinterlands on my last post to participate in the Splinterlands Social Media Challenge contest:
On Hive the author of a post receives 50% of the votes he receives and so with one participation in a weekly Splinterlands contest I earned about 3$ (6.022/2). 3$ is 30% of the cost of entering Splinterlands.
Then there are the giveaways on twitter, the giveaways on Hive, the trivia challenges on Hive and on Telegram, there are SPT tokens and soon there will be lands, SPS governance tokens and who knows how many other possibilities Splinterlands will reserve for its players in the future...

Splinterlands è il mio gioco basato su blockchain preferito e sono trascorsi più di 20 mesi dal giorno in cui ho deciso di pagare il costo di iscrizione di 10$ (19 Ottobre 2019) e iniziare la mia avventura nel mondo dei giochi basati su blockchain.

Nel gioco di Splinterlands i ricavi sono costituiti da:

Quanto valgono le mie carte?
Per conoscere il valore totale in dollari della mia collezione di carte utilizzo sempre l'utile tool del sito Peakmonsters (https://peakmonsters.com/@libertycrypto27/collection) che all'interno della sezione Collection** fornisce il calcolo del valore della mia collezione di carte.
Il sito di peakmonsters calcola il valore della mia collezione in base a due prezzi diversi: **Prezzi di mercato e Prezzi di Listino. Per calcolare il valore della mia collezione di carte considero sempre il valore minore tra:
- il valore totale usando i Prezzi di Mercato.
- il valore totale usando i Prezzi di Listino**.
Nota: Nel calcolo dei ricavi questi due valori sono valori stimati perchè entrambi considerano il caso in cui le carte vengano vendute tutte ai prezzi indicati.
In realtà ci sono carte più facili da vendere e altre meno facili da vendere (le carte che hanno un prezzo di mercato molto elevato) ma fino ad oggi sono sempre riuscito a vendere tutte le carte che ho messo sul mercato al più basso prezzo di mercato.
Se volessi calcolare il valore preciso della mia collezione di carte dovrei considerare solo il Prezzo BID (il valore immediatamente monetizzabile) per ogni carta della mia collezione e il calcolo diventerebbe molto dispendioso in termini di tempo perchè la mia collezione di carte è fornata da 1717 carte (5059 BCX) e per questo motivo mi accontento di un'approssimazione.
Il 26 marzo 2021 la mia collezione di carte aveva un valore di 819,63 $ $ (usando i prezzi di Mercato)

Nel mio report precedente avevo registrato un incremento di valore (+ 184.65$) ma in questo report l'incremento è davvero notevole: 1162.4$. Le carte di Splinterlands continuano ad aumentare il loro valore in particolare le carte Leggendarie e le carte d'oro. Questo incremento di valore è davvero straordinario perchè è avvenuto in circa 43 giorni. Dalla data del mio ultimo report ho investito 187$ e non ho neanche aperto tutti i pacchi Untamed che ho acquistato: ho ancora 47 pacchi da aprire. In questo incremento c'è anche un pò di fortuna. Ieri ho partecipato ad un giveaway organizzato su youtube da @hardrockcrypto e il grande hiver @dexpartacus e ho vinto una carta di grande valore: Scarred LLama Mage (livello 1) il cui valore attuale è di 59.40$.

Quanto valgono i token DEC che ho sul mio wallet?
I DEC (Dark Energy Crystal) sono i Token nativi del gioco di Splinterlands, si ottengono come ricompensa per ogni battaglia vinta all'interno del gioco e si possono trovare all'interno dei forzieri che si ricevono ogni giorno come ricompensa per il completamento delle missioni giornaliere e come ricompensa per il risultato ottenuto alla conclusione delle stagioni di Splinterlands (ogni 15 giorni). I token DEC sono degli utility token perchè hanno tanti casi d'uso:
- possono essere venduti e comprati su HiveEngine/LeoDex/TribalDex
- possono essere utilizzati per comprare carte, pozioni, starter set (Spell book)
- possono essere utilizzati nelle piattaforme DeFi di CubFinance e UniSwap.
- possono essere utilizzati per noleggiare carte
- avranno un peso durante il prossimo airdrop dei token di governance di Splinterlands (i token SPS)
Fino ad oggi ho accumulato sul mio wallet interno al gioco di Splinterlands un totale di 79272 token DEC (mese precedente: 121077 token DEC).
Come puoi vedere dai calcoli nell'immagine seguente, oggi 10 luglio 2021, *79272 token DEC hanno il valore di 90.75 $ (Highest Bid su LeoDex/HiveEngine/TribalDex)

Ricavi dalla vendita di token DEC su Hive Engine
Da quando sono iscritto su Splinterlands ho utilizzato i token DEC principalmente per l'acquisto di carte dal mercato con il fine di potenziare e migliorare la mia collezione di carte. Solo in un'occasione ho deciso di vendere i token DEC per fare un Power Up su Hive e aumentare il mio quantitativo di HP (Hive Power). Il 5 Ottobre 2020 ho venduto 81000 DEC sul mercato di Hive Engine e ho ricevuto in cambio 400,14 HIVE per un valore al momento della vendita di 64,8 $**.
Oggi 400 HIVE valgono molto di più di 64.8$ ma preferisco considerare il valore che avevano nel momento in cui li ho ottenuti dalla vendita dei token DEC.

Quanto valgono i miei Plots?
Il 21 novembre 2020 ho acquistato 3 Plots ad un ottimo prezzo: 7500 DEC per plot. Quindi ho speso in totale 22500 DEC il cui valore in $ al momento dell'acquisto era di 19,66 $**.
I plots fino a non molti giorni fa potevano essere acquistati direttamente dal sito di Splinterlands al prezzo di 20$ ma adesso sono terminati ed è possibile acquistarli solo su mercati esterni al gioco come su LeoDex/HiveEngine/TribalDex. Nel momento in cui scrivo questo post la miglior offerta di vendita di un Plot su Hive Engine è di 110 HIVE equivalenti a 34.65$. Chi è interessato all'acquisto di un Plot può comprarlo immediatamente a questo prezzo oppure può provare a fare un'offerta di acquisto (BID) per sperare di ottenere un prezzo inferiore.
Nel calcolo del mio profitto prendo in considerazione il valore della migliore offerta di acquisto (Highest BID) su https://hive-engine.com/?p=market&t=PLOT che è di 87.1 HIVE.
Il valore totale dei tre Plots in mio possesso è di 87.1 HIVE * 3 plots = 261.3 HIVE = 83.09$ (valore precedente report: 51.87$) *

* CubFinance (https://cubdefi.com/) è una piattaforma di finanza decentralizzata creata e sviluppata da una delle comunità più attive di Hive: la comunità di Leofinance. Su CubFinance utilizzo la Farm DEC-USBD LP nella quale ho messo a lavorare 24000 DEC.

Considerazioni Finali
* Il risultato che ho registrato in questo report è il risultato migliore che ho registrato fino ad oggi. Un incremento del profitto di quasi 1000$ in 45 giorni è davvero un risultato che non mi aspettavo. Sono sempre più felice di aver deciso 20 mesi fa di iniziare la mia avventura di gioco su Splinterlands e il mio grande e unico rammarico è di non aver iniziato prima ma quando è nato Splinterlands io non conoscevo minimamente il significato di gioco basato su Blockchain.
Sono fermamente convinto che i giochi basati su blockchain saranno il futuro dei videogames e ho espresso il mio pensiero in un post che ho scritto poco tempo fa.

Splinterlands è un chiaro esempio di cosa un gioco basato su blockchain può offrire ai giocatori:
- divertimento
- esclusiva proprietà di token e carte di gioco
- molte possibilità di guadagno ed investimento

Ma chi si iscrive oggi ha ancora la possibilità di fare un buon profitto?
* Ovviamente quando un gioco basato su blockchain ha successo come Splinterlands chi si è iscritto prima ha guadagnato molto di più rispetto a chi si è iscritto dopo diversi mesei. Se mi fossi iscritto su Splinterlands fin dal primo giorno il mio profitto avrebbe con molta probabilità uno 0 in più. Io consiglio l'iscrizione a Splinterlands per due motivi:
- è un gioco divertente
- offre tante possibilità di guadagno
Splinterlands può essere giocato in modo totalmente gratuito ma per essere abilitati a ricevere le ricompense di gioco (token DEC e NFT) è necessario pagare il costo di iscrizione di 10$ (Spellbook). Il consiglio che dò alle persone che si sono appena iscritte a Splinterlands è di partecipare ai contest che l'account @splinterlands organizza ogni settimana perchè con la partecipazione ai contest si possono ricevere massimo due voti a settimana dall'account @steemmonsters e il costo di iscrizione al gioco si recupera in poco tempo solo e grazie alla partecipazione ai contest settimanali.
Nell'immagine seguente puoi vedere il voto che ho ricevuto da Splinterlands sul mio ultimo post di partecipazione al contest Social Media Challenge di Splinterlands:
Su Hive l'autore di un post riceve il 50% dei voti che riceve e quindi con una sola partecipazione ad un contest settimanale di Splinterlands ho guadagnato circa 3$ (6.022/2). 3$ sono il 30% del costo di iscrizione di Splinterlands.
Poi ci sono i giveaway su twitter, i giveaway su Hive, i trivia challenge su Hive e su Telegram, ci sono i token SPT e a breve ci saranno le land, i token di governance SPS e chissà quante altre possibilità riserverà Splinterlands ai suoi giocatori...
