Hi all 👋🏻 🦁

Hereby my entry into the #leofinance Challenge of this week:

”What is the value of HBD in your hometown?”

More information about the challenge you find In this post created by @leogrowth

It still runs until: May 15, 23:59 PST so also YOU can still join in! 🦁😎 don’t wait to long…

Let’s begin. First I looked today at what the HBD is in DOLLARS 💵
Screenshot taken today states 1HBD = $0.99

Next I looked up what is $0.99 is in EUROS 💶

As I live in sunny SOUTHERN SPAIN 🇪🇸 along the coast 🌊☀️🏖 this will give me exactly today: €0.93 EUROS 💶

I thought as a comparison let’s go to two different grocery stores to compare what I would get for 10 HBD ~ +/- €9.30 euros in each store and show this with some staple foods.
I mean some basics of food and other products.
A cheap store and a more expensive grocery store were my choice.

I selected the following grocery items, well known around the world for everyone 🌍 (so you could compare it with the groceries easier where you live 😊)

My list:
POTATOES 🥔
ONIONS 🧅
CARROTS 🥕
CUCUMBER 🥒
MILK 🥛
BREAD 🥖
FLOUR 🌾

First GROCERY STORE I WENT TO: LIDL

This will be the cheaper range… or isn’t it?

Let’s find out?

1 KG of potatoes 🥔 for €1.49 euros

1 KG of onions 🧅 for €1.95 euros

1 bag of carrots 🥕 750g for €1.39 euros

I buy 2 cucumbers 🥒 for €1.38 euros, 1KG is €1.97

1 litre of milk 🥛 for €0.89 euros

1 bread 🥖 for €1.99 euros

1 KG of flour 🌾 €0.89 euro

This brings my shopping TOTAL at LIDL for today to exactly: €9.98 euros 💶
That is $10.62 dollars 💵 and in HBD 10.73

NEXT I WENT TO: CARREFOUR

This will be the more expensive store… or isn’t it? 😉

I bought again the same.

1 KG of potatoes 🥔 for €1.49 euros

1 KG of sweet onions 🧅 for €1.89

1 bundle of carrots 🥕 750g for €1.69 euros

Again 2 cucumbers 🥒 for €1.38 (this was weighed to make it the same as in the other store)

1 litre of milk 🥛 for €0.74 euros

1 bread 🥖 for €2.10

1 KG of flour 🌾 for €1.15

This brings my shopping TOTAL at CARREFOUR for today to exactly: €10.44 euros 💶 That is $11.11 dollars 💵 and in HBD 11.22

SO MY CONCLUSION: LIDL is still a bit cheaper than CARREFOUR.
But if I calculate the extra drive to it… it cancels out the profit.
The only difference for me is CARREFOUR has a larger selection of groceries. Depending on what I need I decide which supermarket I go to.
I tend to shop only once a week. As I don’t like shopping hahaha 🤣

I include some more photographs with some other products that makes it more fun to look at too… and where we went for a drink and lunch before our grocery shop. With prices a bit further along…. And some views from today’s surroundings 😉

So keep reading!

For some this doesn’t look like I got much for the 10 HBD, and you are right, I so know.
But we chose to live in a coastal area of southern Spain where it is due to tourism much more expensive than rural and other parts of Spain.

But lately the prices are going up like crazy everywhere in the world. Also here in Spain due to the inflation and everything else that is happening around us.

I read yesterday this article from 4 May 2022: Which supermarkets in Spain have increased their prices the most?

It States:
”Prices have risen by on average 9.4 % in one year, although half of this increase has taken place in the last three months, according to a report by the OCU consumers association.”

Paraphrased: (do read the article for more details)
Why have prices risen so much? This worrying increase in prices is due to different factors;

  • The escalation of energy prices
  • Rising prices of raw materials
  • Rising costs
  • War in Ukraine

We notice it all, when we go out for groceries nowadays.
The prices of so many things has risen. I also noticed in packages the volume of or the amount of products were reduced. So you get less for the same price.
It so doesn’t make sense for me… it all is getting rather expensive.

What is it like in your hometown? Join us in this challenge and tell us all about it.
