Insider trading should be decriminalized. It's as much a crime as money laundering. If representatives and senators are going to keep engaging in insider trading, then the rest of us should be able to capitalize on whatever edge we can get.

As long as the current leadership in Congress retains its position, we should not expect anything to happen when it comes to forbidding trading (insider or otherwise) by any representative or senator. A new generation of congressional leadership is needed for such legislation to be written, and even then that's not a certainty.

Once that legislation somehow leaves the Congress, it needs to be signed into law by the president. If the president isn't on board with the letter and spirit of this legislation, then it won't get signed into law.

It may be easier to decriminalize insider trading than it would be to forbid representatives and senators from engaging in it.
