Did you read the Biography of Musk? X.com is basically PayPal now. PayPal was better at Marketing and X.com had better technology. They were forced to fuse by their capital provides and Musk left the Company after that. So PayPal was based on the x.com technology while maintaining the original PayPal spirit. The reason was Musk, he was doing it, and PayPal was able to sell it. This Deal made him nearly a Billionaire because he was holding vast parts of the company and the new Investor after the Fusion, aka eBay, paid him out to get his assets. He was out nealy a full year before actually getting the Money... AND THAT money created SpaceX and Tesla!
